Roof support

The Eederal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act set standards for mine ventilation, roof support, coal dust concentrations levels, mine inspections, and equipment. As a part of this comprehensive act, miners must receive medical examinations at employer expense, and payments are made from the U.S. government to miners who caimot work because of black lung disease. 

Cone roof storage tanks could he correlated using /lb of steel vs. weight, but the roof support for larger tanks is difficult to estimate, as is the overall thickness. 

The tank had contained a light naphtha and had not been thoroughly cleaned before repairs started. It had been filled with water and then emptied, but some naphtha remained in various nooks and crannies. (It might, for example, have gotten into the hollow roof supports through pinholes or cracks and then drained out when the tank was emptied.) No tests were carried out with combustible gas detectors.

The fire s intensity and the amount of water used to fight the fire are both factors that affect a building. Fire can burn away floor joists and weaken roof trusses. Heat from the fire can weaken concrete and the mortar in wall joints and elongate steel roof supports. Excess water can add dangerous weight to floors and walls.

When a horizontal opening is created in a solid or fissured rock formation, tensile stresses are generated in the roofs of these openings. In a solid formation, the opening may remain stable for various lengths of time. In a fissured formation, or even in a solid formation of weak rock, the opening may cave immediately, or in a short period of time. Rock bolts are widely used in mine tunnels drifts) as a major means of roof support. 

The main question that has been raised is whether failure of roof support in Spring Quarry is likely to cause trouble in Tunnel Quarry by initiating lateral down-dip roof slide. There seems no reason to anticipate such sliding, for failure in Spring Quarry would not open up any space to receive down-dip slide of roof. Careful examination has, moreover, not revealed any tendency to lateral...

Truss- An engineered and manufactured roof support member with "zigzag" framing members. Does the same job as a rafter but is designed to have a longer span than a rafter.
