Processing blending

Polyurethane engineering thermoplastics are also manufactured from MDI and short-chain glycols (49). These polymers were introduced by Upjohn/Dow under the trade name Isoplast. The glycols used are 1,6-hexanediol and cyclohexanedimethanol. 1,4-Butanediol is too volatile at the high processing temperatures used in the reaction extmsion process. A blending system provides the kiln with a homogeneous raw feed. In the wet process the mill slurry is blended in a series of continuously agitated tanks in which the composition, usually the CaO content, is adjusted as required. These tanks may also serve as kiln feed tanks, or the slurry after agitation is pumped to large kiln feed basins. Dry-process blending is usually accompHshed in a silo with compressed air. 

Unlike incompatible heterogeneous blends of elastomer-elastomer, elastomer-plastic, and plastic-plastic, the reactively processed heterogeneous blends are expected to develop a variable extent of chemical interaction. For this reason the material properties, interfacial properties, and phase morphology of reactively processed blends would differ significantly from heterogeneous mixtures. 

Blends of polypropylene (PP) and liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) processed without melting the LCP were compared with conventional melt processed blends. In a first stage, PP was blended with 20 wt% of LCP in a twin-screw extruder with the take-up speed varied to achieve blends with different LCP fiber dimensions. In the second stage, these blends were processed both below and above the Tm of the LCP by extrusion and injection molding.

In this chapter, the big four thermoplastics are covered polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polystyrene. Like most other thermoplastics, they are long-chain polymers that become soft when heated and can be molded under pressure. They are linear- or branch-chained and, except for some exotic copolymers, have little or no cross-linking. Technological advances continue. Ensuring homogeneous mixing of the components (APIs and excipients) of a pharmaceutical preparation is a crucial prerequisite for obtaining proper solid dosages (tablets and capsules). Pharmaceutical manufacturers invest much time, labor and material resources in this process. Blending is intended to ensure uniform distribution of all components in the end products,so that each dose wiU contain the correct amount of the active ingredient. 

Figure 7.4 shows the glass transition temperatures of PVDF/PMMA blends as a function of PVDF content after a melt process. The results " show agreement with Gordon-Taylor relation up to about 40 wt %, which is much higher than the 20wt % obtained from the annealed blends. This is certainly a result of the increased content of amorphous PVDF matrix in melt-processed blends compared with annealed blends.

There remains the unanswered requirement to demonstrate blend uniformity of active ingredients B2. This issue might be addressed by testing the blends of a series of batches until sufficient data are accumulated to consider the process reliable. Processing effects. Citrus oil quality may be affected by certain processing parameters. Some which have been studied include effects of yield from the fruit, the amount of water used during recovery and extraction, storage of fruit prior to processing, blending of fruit varieties, and handling the emulsion or finished oils (12).
