A limited study in animals also presents evidence for increased susceptibility to Streptococcus zooepidomicus (Aran d et al. 1986). Immune system effects observed in mice exposed orally to trichloroethylene included inhibition of cell-mediated immunity, delayed type hypersensitivity, and inhibition of antibody-mediated immunity (Sanders et al. 1982). Female mice appeared to be more sensitive than male mice. A study in which a susceptible strain of mice was treated with intraperitoneal injections of trichloroethylene suggests that trichloroethylene can accelerate the autoimmune response (Khan et al. 1995). The immune system may be a sensitive end point for toxic effects from low-level exposure to trichloroethylene however, no firm conclusions can be drawn from the available information. Additional human and animal studies are needed to better characterize this end point and determine the potential for immunological effects for people exposed to trichloroethylene at hazardous waste sites.

Also known as antibody-mediated rejection, humoral rejection is the process of creating graft-specific antibodies.1,4 This type of rejection occurs less frequently than cell-mediated acute rejection. Humoral rej ection is characterized by deposition of immunoglobulins and complement in allograft tissues. Treatment for this type of rejection is not well defined, yet several reports have shown that treatments such as plasmapheresis, immunoglobulin therapy, rituximab, and/or antithymocyte globulin maybe effective. 

Finally, addition of Tyv-specific antibodies to Caco-2 cultures significantly inhibits larval moulting (McVay et al., 2000). It seems likely that the inhibitory effect is an indirect result of antibody-mediated encumbrance of larvae in the monolayer rather than a direct effect on the process of moulting. Nevertheless, the observation provides further support for the conclusion that antibodies specific for Tyv interfere with the niche of the parasite.

Within 5 min after injection, the anti-aGal IgMs detected by ELISA were diminished to 20% of the initial value determined prior to the administration, and remained at low levels for more than 4 h. Most importantly, anti-aGal antibody-mediated hemolytic activity was completely eliminated.

Despite the scientific elegance of the antibody-mediated approach to tumour detection/destruc-tion, initial clinical trials proved disappointing. A number of factors contributed to their poor therapeutic performance, particularly against solid tumours. Lambert-Eaton syndrome is an antibody-mediated neuromuscular junction disorder. This disorder, which is most frequently encountered in patients with small-cell lung carcinoma, is characterized clinically by weakness and hyporeflexia. The impaired release of acetylcholine vesicles from presynaptic terminals at neuromuscular junctions that causes the weakness is a consequence of autoantibodies against small cell carcinoma epitopes that cross-react with and downregulate the expression of motor nerve terminal Ca2+ channels [39].
