Antibody-mediated immunity

A limited study in animals also presents evidence for increased susceptibility to Streptococcus zooepidomicus (Aran d et al. 1986). Immune system effects observed in mice exposed orally to trichloroethylene included inhibition of cell-mediated immunity, delayed type hypersensitivity, and inhibition of antibody-mediated immunity (Sanders et al. 1982). Female mice appeared to be more sensitive than male mice. A study in which a susceptible strain of mice was treated with intraperitoneal injections of trichloroethylene suggests that trichloroethylene can accelerate the autoimmune response (Khan et al. 1995). The immune system may be a sensitive end point for toxic effects from low-level exposure to trichloroethylene however, no firm conclusions can be drawn from the available information. Additional human and animal studies are needed to better characterize this end point and determine the potential for immunological effects for people exposed to trichloroethylene at hazardous waste sites.

The only internationally used drug effective for treating schistosomiasis is praziquantel. This drug induces a rapid influx into the worms of surrounding Ca2+, a process that leads to paralysis (Martin, 1997), and changes in the surface membrane architecture that lead to the exposure of worm antigens that are normally cryptic (Brindley and Sher, 1987). Parasites affected in this way become susceptible to antibody-mediated immune attack and are killed as a result of the synergistic actions of chemotherapy and the immune response (Doenhoff et al., 1987 Brindley etal., 1989).

B cells Type of lymphocyte responsible for antibody-mediated immunity mature in the bone marrow and circulate in the circulatory and lymph systems where they transform into antibody-producing plasma cells when exposed to antigens. 

Gusperimus is a guanidine derivative with antitumor and immunosuppressive properties. Its mechanism of action is not well understood and may involve blockade of the maturation of B and T lymphocytes and monocytes, with inhibition of both cell-mediated and antibody-mediated immunity. In preliminary clinical trials in transplant patients, adverse effects at low doses included mild-to-moderate leukopenia, facial and perioral numbness, anorexia, gastrointestinal disturbances, facial flushing. 

Antibody-Mediated Immunity (Humoral Immunity) This is the production of antibodies by B lymphocytes to neutralize and destroy an antigen. Antibodies are created in response to sufficient exposure to the antigen through an invasion by the antigen or a vaccination. A vaccination contains small amounts of the antigen sufficient to trigger the immune system to create antibodies.
