Contributing factors

Capital and operating costs will increase as more separator stages are added to the process line, so a balance has to be struck between increased oil yield and cost. It is uncommon to find that economics support more than 3 stages of separation and one or two stage separation is more typical. The increased risk of separation shut down is also a contributing factor in limiting numbers. 

Many properties of colloidal suspensions, such as their stability, rheology, and phase behaviour, are closely related to the interactions between the suspended particles. The background of the most important contributing factors to these interactions is discussed in this section. 

Simplicity of production, high analysis, and excellent agronomic quaUty are reasons for the sustained high production and consumption of TSP. A contributing factor is that manufacture of the triple superphosphate has been an outlet for so-called sludge acid, the highly impure phosphoric acid obtained as a by-product of normal acid purification. 

The Du Pont HaskeU Laboratory for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine has conducted a study to determine the acute inhalation toxicity of fumes evolved from Tefzel fluoropolymers when heated at elevated temperatures. Rats were exposed to decomposition products of Tefzel for 4 h at various temperatures. The approximate lethal temperature (ALT) for Tefzel resins was deterrnined to be 335—350°C. AH rats survived exposure to pyrolysis products from Tefzel heated to 300°C for this time period. At the ALT level, death was from pulmonary edema carbon monoxide poisoning was probably a contributing factor. Hydrolyzable fluoride was present in the pyrolysis products, with concentration dependent on temperature. 

Eault tree analysis (ETA) is a widely used computer-aided tool for plant and process safety analysis (69). One of the primary strengths of the method is the systematic, logical development of the many contributing factors that might result ia an accident. This type of analysis requires that the analyst have a complete understanding of the system and plant operations and the various equipment failure modes. 

Erosion-corrosion of these components was caused by high-velocity turbulent flow resulting from incomplete opening of the valve. In this case, erosion is the dominant factor in the metal loss, corrosion being a minor contributing factor. 

Cavitation damage in the complete absence of corrosion has been demonstrated (e.g., roughening of polished glass in cavitating distilled water). However, in industrial situations it is highly probable that corrosion is a common contributing factor. 

The dezincification was caused by underdeposit corrosion. The fact that the brass was not an inhibited grade was a major contributing factor. Chemical cleaning had not been done since this exchanger was installed. No chemical treatment was used on either external or internal surfaces.

One should also note that the interaction across the interface between the PSA and the paint takes time to build. Both continued wet-out of the adhesive and the interfacial rearrangements of the functional groups are contributing factors to this time delayed adhesion build. 

It is clear that European civil aircraft manufacturers adopted adhesive bonding for major structural elements much more rapidly than their American counterparts, but it is difficult to determine exactly why. Certainly a number of contributing factors are obvious. One was a history of success in incorporating adhesively bonded structure in military aircraft such as the Mosquito. Although the Mosquito was the most unusual and extreme example of adhesively bonded structure, other European wartime aircraft contained bonded structure as well. American military craft of the time were almost exclusively riveted aluminum structure. 

The development of MORT was initiated by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, and is described in Johnson (1980). MORT is a comprehensive analytical procedure that provides a disciplined method for detennining the causes and contributing factors of major accidents. It also serves as a tool to evaluate the quality of an existing safety program. 

The size of the cation in the chloroaluminate ionic liquids also appears to have an impact on the viscosity. For ionic liquids with the same anion(s) and compositions, the trend is for greater viscosity with larger cation size (Table 3.2-2). An additional contributing factor to the effect of the cation on viscosity is the asymmetry of the alkyl substitution. Highly asymmetric substitution has been identified as important for obtaining low viscosities [17]. 

Carbon dioxide has been implicated as a contributing factor in global warming. Increased global warming has been associated with increased release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere attributed in part to an increase in the combustion of hydrocarbon fuels. Carbon dioxide is an inevitable consequence of the complete combustion of hydrocarbons in air. If combustion devices are made more efficient, less fuel is required and less carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. 

The most frequent cause of damage and even explosion in boilers is a low-water condition. This will expose the heating surfaces, which ultimately overheat and rupture under the operating pressure. Experience has shown that since the introduction of controls for unattended automatic operation of boilers the accident rate has increased. Investigation invariably shows that lack of maintenance has been the main contributing factor. It is therefore imperative that personnel responsible for the running of the boiler plant be fully trained and conversant with its safe operation. 

The costs of water, energy and land are all contributing factors in economic assessment. The emphasis placed on each differs from the varying viewpoints, but it is the end user that has to foot the bill . It is therefore in his interests...
