Annotating

The total undiscounted cash surplus (the ultimate cash surplus) is 190 m. The total discounted cash surplus ( 24.8 m) is called the net present value (NPV) of the project. Since in this example the discount rate applied is 20%, this figure would be the 20% NPV also annotated NPV(20). This is the present value at the beginning of Year 1 of the total project, assuming a 20% discount rate. 

A two-dimensional slice may be taken either parallel to one of the principal co-ordinate planes (X-Y, X-Z and Y-Z) selected from a menu, or in any arbitrary orientation defined on screen by the user. Once a slice through the data has been taken, and displayed on the screen, a number of tools are available to assist the operator with making measurements of indications. These tools allow measurement of distance between two points, calculation of 6dB or maximum amplitude length of a flaw, plotting of a 6dB contour, and textual aimotation of the view. Figure 11 shows 6dB sizing and annotation applied to a lack of fusion example. 

Clearly, the physical chemistry of surfaces covers a wide range of topics. Most of these subjects are sampled in this book, with emphasis on fundamentals and important theoretical models. With each topic there is annotation of current literature with citations often chosen because they contain bibliographies that will provide detailed source material. We aim to whet the reader s appetite for surface physical chemistry and to provide the tools for basic understanding of these challenging and interesting problems.

GenBank [32] is a text-numeric database of genetic sequences with more than 28 billion bases in 22 million sequences (January, 2003) from genetic research. The collection of all publidy available sequences is annotated with information such as sequence description, source organism, sequence length, or references. The database, estabhshed in 1967, is updated daily and produced by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (USA). 

The protein sequence database is also a text-numeric database with bibliographic links. It is the largest public domain protein sequence database. The current PIR-PSD release 75.04 (March, 2003) contains more than 280 000 entries of partial or complete protein sequences with information on functionalities of the protein, taxonomy (description of the biological source of the protein), sequence properties, experimental analyses, and bibliographic references. Queries can be started as a text-based search or a sequence similarity search. PIR-PSD contains annotated protein sequences with a superfamily/family classification. 

The SWISS-PROT database [36] release 40.44 (February, 2003) contains over 120 000 sequences of proteins with more than 44 million amino adds abstracted from about 100 000 references. Besides sequence data, bibHographical references, and taxonomy data, there are highly valuable annotations of information (e.g., protein function), a minimal level of redundancy, and a high level of integration with other databases (EMBL, PDB, PIR, etc.). The database was initiated in 1987 by a partnership between the Department of Medicinal Biochemistry of the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and the EMBL. Now SWISS-PROT is driven as a joint project of the EMBL and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB).

The following experiments may he used to introduce the statistical analysis of data in the analytical chemistry laboratory. Each experiment is annotated with a brief description of the data collected and the type of statistical analysis used in evaluating the data.

Annotated methods of typical analytical procedures link theory with practice. The format encourages students to think about the design of the procedure and why it works.

The networking of personal computers has continued and has enabled the sharing of expensive hard-copy output devices and other peripherals and has provided the significant benefit of faciUtating the transfer of data between computers. Joint authorship of technical articles is a quick and easy process with networked computers. The interappHcation communication that today links appHcations within a single computer will transparentiy link appHcations on networked computers. Voice-annotated documents are already available. 

We have also included an annotated bibliography of some selected publications on high-pressure shock compression to familiarize the reader with a broader interpretation of some of these publications.
