During the last 25 years, much has been learned about construction materials for petroleum facilities. Unfortunately, the information is scattered throughout various technical articles in open literature, technical committee minutes, and engineering office files. This book brings together this information for the first time in one document and also represents a summary of the authors engineering experience during the last 30 years. 

The nomenclature in the field of explosives and war chemicals is perplexing. Most of the chief explosives are known under many different names and designations, including the correct chemical name, chemical synonyms, American and foreign trade names, and warfare symbols. In literature on the subject sometimes one term is used, and sometimes another. Unless one knows the meaning of all of the terms, it is often necessary to make a search for information and this, in the literature on explosives, is a time-consuming procedure. For instance, in a technical article on detonators, a chemist may find a reference to Dinol. He knows this is a trade name and if he does not know the chemical composition of the product and wishes to find it out, he has to know its correct chemical name. He may spend quite a bit of time before he establishes the fact that Dinol is the commercial term for dinitrodiazophenol. 

At the end of each of the previous chapters there are pertinent references that cite the origin of an idea or an incident. This final chapter is dedicated to providing a list of b(X)ks. btx)klets, technical articles, organizations, web site addresses, and other resources that are essential to consider when developing or improving a Chemical PrcKess Safety Program. Many of the references listed can supply, in turn, large numbers of additional references. 

In this book, wherever possible literature references are given which should be followed for further information. The Oil Gas Journal articles are a useful source and these often give further references to conference proceedings and articles published in the academic literature. As well as technical articles. Hydrocarbon Processing produces reviews of technology on a regular basis. Nowadays, these are issued on a CD ROM and provide more details of different technologies from the various process licensors. 

In larger companies, the subject classification or indexing of technical articles, patents, and books greatly facilitates searching. A company with such a program is actually accumulating continuous searches in the subject classes of the classification system.
