Clearly, the physical chemistry of surfaces covers a wide range of topics. Most of these subjects are sampled in this book, with emphasis on fundamentals and important theoretical models. With each topic there is annotation of current literature with citations often chosen because they contain bibliographies that will provide detailed source material. We aim to whet the reader s appetite for surface physical chemistry and to provide the tools for basic understanding of these challenging and interesting problems. [Pg.3]

The presence of defects and impurities is unavoidable. They are created during tire growtli or penetrate into tlie material during tlie processing. Secondary and Micronutrients in Fertilizers The great majority of farm fertilizers are produced, marketed, and appHed with regard only to the primary plant nutrient content. The natural supply of secondary and micronutrients in the majority of soils is usually sufficient for optimum growth of most principal crops. There are, however, many identified geographical areas and crop—soil combinations for which soil appHcation of secondary and/or micronutrient sources is beneficial or even essential. The fertilizer industry accepts the responsibiHty for providing these secondary and micronutrients, most often as an additive or adjunct to primary nutrient fertilizers. However, the source chemicals used to provide the secondary and micronutrient elements are usually procured from outside the fertilizer industry, for example from mineral processors. The responsibiHties of the fertilizer producer include procurement of an acceptable source material and incorporation in a manner that does not decrease the chemical or physical acceptabiHty of the fertilizer product and provides uniform appHcation of the added elements on the field. [Pg.241]

Production. Indium is recovered from fumes, dusts, slags, residues, and alloys from zinc or lead—zinc smelting. The source material itself, a reduction bullion, flue dust, or electrolytic slime intermediate, is leached with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, the solutions are concentrated, if necessary, and cmde indium is recovered as 99+% metal. This impure indium is then refined to 99.99%, 99.999%, 99.9999%, or higher grades by a variety of classical chemical and electrochemical processes. [Pg.80]

Most areas of research and appHcations involving the use of radioisotopes require a knowledge of what radiations come from each isotope. The particular apphcation determines what type of information is needed. If the quantity of a radionuchde in a particular sample or at a particular location is to be deterrnined and this value is to be deterrnined from the y-ray spectmm, the half-life of the nucHde and the energies and intensities or emission probabiUties of the y-rays of interest must be known. Usually it is preferable to use the y-rays for an assay measurement because the d- and P-rays ate much more readily absorbed by the source material, and may not reach the sample surface having their original energies. Until 1960, coal was the source material for almost all benzene produced in Europe. Petroleum benzene was first produced in Europe by the United Kingdom in 1952, by Erance in 1958, by the Eederal Republic of Germany in 1961, and by Italy in 1962.
