Clearly, the physical chemistry of surfaces covers a wide range of topics. Most of these subjects are sampled in this book, with emphasis on fundamentals and important theoretical models. With each topic there is annotation of current literature with citations often chosen because they contain bibliographies that will provide detailed source material. We aim to whet the reader s appetite for surface physical chemistry and to provide the tools for basic understanding of these challenging and interesting problems. 

Classified bibliography of the literature includes unannotated entries on editions of alchemical treatises, critical and otherwise, and annotated entries for secondary works such as books, journal articles, and essays in collections. Cross-references link materials of similar topic... 

As with the prior edition, this work will be of use not only to the dedicated "phosphorus chemist" but also to the practicing chemist who only occasionally is involved with organophosphorus chemistry, using it as an aspect of other synthetic pursuits. To this end, it contains numerous experimental examples from the literature with added notes from the authors own experiences in utilizing these reactions. It is intended to be not only a source of critical and annotated references but also a working guide for the chemist in the laboratory.

Prosite is perhaps the best known of the domain databases (Hofmann et al., 1999). The Prosite database is a good source of high quality annotation for protein domain families. Prosite documentation includes a section on the functional meaning of a match to the entry and a list of example members of the family. Prosite documentation also includes literature references and cross links to other databases such as the PDB collection of protein structures (Bernstein et al., 1977). For each Prosite document, there is a Prosite pattern, profile, or both to detect the domain family. The profiles are the most sensitive detection method in Prosite. The Prosite profiles provide Zscores for matches allowing statistical evaluation of the match to a new protein. Profiles are now available for many of the common protein domains. Prosite profiles use the generalized profile software (Bucher et al., 1996). 

It is the purpose of this chapter to summarize knowledge dealing with the role of electrostatic phenomena in particulate systems, especially in aerosols. A relatively comprehensive annotated bibliography by Blake and Lapple (BIO) has surveyed the bulk of the literature through 1965. This chapter cites and summarizes the results of the more important or directly relevant work in this field.1 However, before considering specific phenomena, it is desirable to review some of the fundamental principles in the field of electrostatics. 

Equation 6.38 which applies to low values of d/dt is plotted in Figure 6.6, together with experimental points from the literature, annotated according to the d/dt range which is applicable 14. The scatter, and the low experimental values of n, are attributable partly to the wider range of d/dt values covered and also inaccuracies in the experimental measurements which are obtained from the results of a number of workers. For emf = 0.43, the calculated values of n are virtually unchanged over the range 10 < Ga < 105. 

A hopefully complete bibliography of gas electron diffraction literature (from the very beginning through 1979) is expected to appear in the near future as a result of the activity of the Ulm center. A computerized storage and retreavel system of annotated bibliography is under way. This system will be capable to answer a great variety of questions that may occur in molecular structure literature search. 

The main purpose of this section is to provide a brief survey of the ring systems that have been reported in the literature. The bulk of the information is contained in the briefly annotated tables. Wherever possible, reference is made to the relevant reviews, or to a recent leading article.
