Bibliography, annotated

The following annotated bibliography on prescription drugs contains six sections  

Within each of these sections, the citations are divided into subsections on books, articles, and web documents. The topics and citations include technical and nontechnical works, in-depth and short treatments, and research and opinion pieces (see chapter 6 for an overview on how to most effectively use these materials). 

Andrea. The Age of Anxiety A History of America s Turbulent Affair with Tranquilizers. New York Basic Books, 2009. This book traces the history of drugs to treat anxiety from the first tranquilizer sold in 1955 to the billions of antianxiety drugs sold today. Although tranquilizers like Valium fell out of favor because of their addictiveness, the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressants have become widely popular treatments for anxiety. The book places the popularity of these types of drugs within the larger context of what Tone calls the tranquilizer culture. 

Walker, Bingham, A. The Snake-Oil Syndrome Patent Medicine Advertising. Hanover, Mass. Christopher Publishing House, 1994. With reprints of the words and images from patent medicine ads, this book illustrates the excessive claims made by merchants, marketers, and manufacturers during the 1800s and early 1900s. 

Frances Oldham Kelsey FDA Medical Reviewer Leaves Her Mark on History. FDA Consumer 35, no. 2 (March/April 2001) 24-29. This article tells the story behind Kelsey s actions to block the approval of thalidomide and prevent the epidemic of birth defects that occurred in Europe from playing out in the United States. When working for the FDA, she demanded better studies of the drug s long-term safety, after which evidence of harm from Europe emerged and justified her careful approach. 

This chapter provides an extensive annotated bibliography on gun control and gun rights issues. The bibliography is divided into the following 12 categories  

Introductions, Overviews, and Anthologies Guns in American Society and Culture Gun Control Advocacy (General) 

and Violence Youth and Guns Gun Safety Constitutional Issues Laws, Legislation, and Politics Gun Liability International Perspectives 

Each category is further divided into books, articles, and Web documents. Note that many print articles are also available online, either through specific Web addresses or via online periodical databases. 

This section lists general reference works, including encyclopedias and bibliographies. 

Advanced users can also benefit from reading this guide. Many people use a limited number of algorithms and methods for chemical calculations. This book compares of the different methods in HyperChem and helps you determine the most appropriate method for your research problems. The book discusses strengths and weaknesses of the methods and algorithms. 

Although you can investigate many research problems after reading the//yperC/zem Reference Manual HyperChem Computational Chemistry, you may also need information from textbooks and current journals. The following list of selected texts can supply the background necessary for understanding the calculations in HyperChem. 

Tildesley, D.J. Computer Simulation of Liquids, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1987. 

An important though demanding book. Topics include statistical mechanics, Monte Carlo simulations, equilibrium and n on -equilibrium m olecular dyn am ics, an alysis of calculation al results, and applications of methods to problems in liquid dynamics. The authors also discuss and compare many algorithms used in force field simulations. Includes a microfiche containing dozens of Fortran-77 subroutines relevant to molecular dynamics and liquid simulations. 

Berkert, U. Allin ger, N.L. Molecular Mechanics, American Chemical Society Monograph 177, Washington, D.C., 1982. 

Research progress is very rapid in biochemistry, and the literature in the field is vast and growing. Many books appear each year, and a large number of primary research journals and review journals report on original research. References to this body of literature are provided at the end of each chapter. A particularly useful reference is Scientific American its articles include general overviews of the topics discussed. Trends in Biochemical Sciences and Science (a journal published weekly by the American Association for the Advancement of Science) are more advanced but can serve as primary sources of information about a given topic.
