Science Citation Subject

Citation Searching. In the scholarly Hterature, authors cite earHer pubHcations that relate to the work being reported, thus a subject relationship exists between the citing and cited Hterature. This relationship has formed the basis for the Science Citation Index and related products, developed by the Institute for Scientific Information. Known as Scisearch in its on-line version, the Science Citation Index has become an important information retrieval tool in the second half of the twentieth century. It has been used for straightforward subject searching, in which mode it complements traditional indexed databases and indexes. It has also become a popular tool for hihliometric studies of various sorts, such as attempts to measure the relative impact of research carried out by different individuals or organizations, or the relative impact of pubHcations in different journals. [Pg.58]

It is impossible to discuss all papers which have appeared on the subjects included in this review (in order to keep it within reasonable limits) most of the important papers are included, and this review should give the reader an insight in the state of the art of solid state infra-red spectroscopy. The attention of the reader is drawn to the existence of Science Citation Index if a reference of this paper is used as a leading reference, Science Citation Index will quickly yield a list of other works which have cited the particular reference, enabling him to do a relatively complete literature search in a short time. [Pg.62]

The Institute of Scientific Information (ISI, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) operates a computer-based weekly service called ASCA (Automatic Subject Citation Alert). Articles from prime scientific journals may be located through cited item terms as well as through title terms. Clusters of articles with common references will usually be about the same subject, so a reference used as a profile term will locate articles citing that reference, as articles are published. A similar principle is employed in the Science Citation Index for retrospective searching, where all items having a common reference are brought together beneath the item they cite. [Pg.290]

In spite of the advent of density functional theory (see Section 21.2), the number of publications with semiempirical calculations remains high. In the Science Citation Index, one finds for each of the past ten years more than 1000 such papers under the topic semiempirical/MNDO/AMl/PM3 , the actual numbers fluctuating between 1100 and 1500 (1994-2003) this should be regarded as a lower limit of the actual usage, for obvious reasons. Since DFT calculations have replaced semiempirical calculations in many studies on medium-sized molecules, the latter must have found new areas of application. In this section, we attempt to identify such areas from a survey of the recent literature. The subject of hydrogen bond (or bonding) is certainly a popular one. The ISI Science Citation database lists more than 26,000 papers that use this phrase in the title, abstract, or as a keyword. In the year 1999 alone there were about 3,000 such papers published. The importance of the hydrogen bond stems mainly from the fact that for certain types of molecules formation of such bonds determines the structure of the dimers or of larger molecular clusters. Thus, hydrogen bonds are characteristic features of many clusters, biological aggregates, and of condensed phases. [Pg.147]

Additional citations may be found in the references cited in the journal article. In this way, the background leading to the research can be examined. It is also possible to conduct a search forward in time from the date of the journal article through the Science Citation Index. This publication provides the service of listing articles and the papers in which these articles were cited. Although the Science Citation Index consists of several types of indices, the Citation Index is most useful for the purposes described here. A person who knows of a particular key reference on a subject can examine the Science Citation Index to obtain a list of papers that have used that seminal reference in support of the work described. Science Citation Index. Produced by Thomson-Reuters, this is a unique reference tool that provides an alternative method to traditional subject-based literature searching. It enables you to search forward from a particular literature reference. For example, to find later applications of a reaction or method that was described in a specific paper, you simply look up the entry for that paper in Science Citation Index to identify papers that subsequently cited the original article. A Web version, called Web of Science, is now the most commonly used interface to the wealth of citation data gathered from the scientific and technical literature. [Pg.911]

In spite of the labels, all four of these disciplines are closely interrelated via cross-citations. Sites such as Bath Information and Data Services (BIDS) and web of Science (WOS) provide access to abstracts of recent publications use these to find relevant literature for specific topics. In the case of BIDS, it provides access to databases covering subjects from science, engineering and medicine to economics, politics, education and the arts. Specific databases offered include ISI citation indexes EMBASE (international biomedical information) INSPEC (physics, electronic engineering and computing) international bibliography of the social sciences (IBSS) The Royal Society of Chemistry databases and education databases. Medhne MEDLINE (Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online) is a bibhographic database. It contains more than 16 million references to journal articles starting from 1949 till present. All the records in MEDLINE are indexed with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). MEDLINE is a part of PubMed and covers the subjects of biomedicine and health, chemical sciences, bioengineering, etc. MEDLINE is the primary component of PubMed (http //pubmed.gov) a link to PubMed is found on the National Library of Medicine (NLM) home page at http // www.nlm.nih.gov. The result of a MEDLINE/PubMed search is a list of citations (including authors, tide, source, and often an abstract) to journal articles and an indication of free electronic full-text availability. [Pg.75]

Conference Proceedings Citation Index (1978-). Philadelphia Thomson Renters (0149-8088). Originally known as Index to Scientific and Technical Proceedings from the Institute for Scientific Information, this service provides a table of contents for published conference proceedings. Several indexes cover category, author or editor, sponsor, location, corporate, and subject of conference. It is available also in electronic formats. Fuel and Energy Abstracts. Available via ScienceDirect, also published bi-monthly in paper copy. Provides summaries of world literature on scientific, technical, environmental, and commercial aspects of fuel and energy. Covers over 800 international publications, monographs, conference proceedings, reports, surveys, and statistical analyses. Number of abstracts per issue can vary from 500 to 800. The online indexing is inconsistent. Individual abstracts are indexed in most issues. However, in newer issues, the citations are buried under headings, such as Liquid Euels, Heat Pumps, and Fuel Science and Technology, and cannot be retrieved without a secondary keyword search of the actual subject index of a particular issue. [Pg.474]
