As a practice-based subject, the formation and development of tribology have always been associated with the requirement from society and technology development. Tribology experienced several different stages in its history. Its developing process indicates an obvious trend of integration and combination of multi-scientific subjects in a multi-scale nature from macroscopic dimension to nanometre.

The Bayesian and general perspectives on risk ask for interpretations of output uncertainty as knowledge-bases subjective degree of belief, without and with additional assessment of the strength of knowledge, respectively. 

Although lubricant base stocks have been subjected to dewaxing processes, they still contain large amounts of paraffins that result in a high pour point for the oil. This of course is an emotive subject, since it implies placing a value on human life. 

Gases which are high in FIjS are subject to a de-sulphurisation process in which H2S is converted into elemental sulphur or a metal sulphide. There are a number of processes based on absorption in contactors, adsorption (to a surface) in molecular sieves or chemical reaction (e.g. with zinc oxide). 

It takes time to train a film interpreter. In addition, human interpretation of weld quality based on film radiography is very subjective, inconsistent, labour intensive, and sometimes biased. It is thus desirable to develop some forms of computer-aided systems. 

The SPATE technique is based on measurement of the thermoelastic effect. Within the elastic range, a body subjected to tensile or compressive stresses experiences a reversible conversion between mechanical and thermal energy. Provided adiabatic conditions are maintained, the relationship between the reversible temperature change and the corresponding change in the sum of the principal stresses is linear and indipendent of the load frequency. 

The laser-based gun tube inspection systems are intended to augment and, perhaps eventually, replace the labor-intensive, time consuming and subjective visual inspection methods that are currently employed by these facilities. 

Another application of laser-based profilometry is the inspection of rocket and missile components. The U.S. Air Force has funded work to develop a non-contact laser-based profilometer for the inside surface of solid rocket motors. Over time, these devices are subject to slumping and cracking, which could potentially render the rocket motor ineffective and hazardous. When fully implemented, this system will provide a meaningful screening method for evaluating the condition of aging rocket motors. 

A general prerequisite for the existence of a stable interface between two phases is that the free energy of formation of the interface be positive were it negative or zero, fluctuations would lead to complete dispersion of one phase in another. As implied, thermodynamics constitutes an important discipline within the general subject. It is one in which surface area joins the usual extensive quantities of mass and volume and in which surface tension and surface composition join the usual intensive quantities of pressure, temperature, and bulk composition. The thermodynamic functions of free energy, enthalpy and entropy can be defined for an interface as well as for a bulk portion of matter. Chapters II and ni are based on a rich history of thermodynamic studies of the liquid interface. The phase behavior of liquid films enters in Chapter IV, and the electrical potential and charge are added as thermodynamic variables in Chapter V. 

There has been extensive work done on myoglobin, haemoglobin, Cytocln-ome-c, rhodopsin and bacteriorhodopsin. In fact, there are literally hundreds of articles on each of the above subjects. Flere we will consider haemoglobin [12]. The first tliree of these examples are based on the protohaeme unit, shown in figure Bl.2.10.
