First, considerably greater emphasis has been placed on semimicro techniques and their application to preparations, separations, analysis and physical determinations such as those of molecular weight. We have therefore greatly expanded the section on Manipulation on a semi-micro scale which was in the Third Edition, and we have described many more preparations on this scale, some independent and others as alternatives to the larger-scale preparations which immediately precede them. Some 40 separate preparations on the semi-micro scale are described in detail, in addition to specific directions for the preparation of many classes of crystalline derivatives required for identification purposes. The equipment required for these small-scale reactions has been selected on a realistic basis, and care has been taken not to include the very curious pieces of apparatus sometimes suggested as necessary for working on the semi-micro scale. [Pg.585]

These preparations, with those noted in the Preface to the Third Edition, cover a considerable proportion of the standard synthetic reactions. Most of these preparations come towards the end of Part II Preparations), and both elementary and advanced students should have no difficulty in selecting the preparative work they require. [Pg.585]

At the research level, spectroscopy continues to flourish and is continually developing with occasional quantum leaps. For example, such a leap resulted from the development of lasers. Not all leaps provide suitable material for inclusion in an undergraduate text such as this. Flowever, even in the relatively short period of seven years since the third edition, there have been either new developments or consolidation of rather less recent ones, which are not only of the greatest importance but which can (1 hope ) be communicated at this level. [Pg.472]

The objective of the FCC is to define food-grade chemicals in terms of the characteristics that estabUsh identity, strength, and quahty. It provides specifications in monograph form for some 900 food additives, together with analytical test procedures by which compliance with the specifications can be determined. The third edition was pubUshed in 1981 supplements followed in 1983, 1986, 1991, and 1993. The fourth edition is in preparation as of this writing and is to include monographs for almost 1000 food chemicals, including flavors. [Pg.446]

The years since pubHcation of the third edition of the Eniyclopedia (1978—1984) have brought the rise and fall of the minicomputer, the worldwide ascendancy of microprocessor-based personal computers, the emergence of powerhil scientific work stations, the acceptance of scientific visualization, further advances with supercomputers, the rise and fall of the rninisupercomputer, and the realization that the future Hes in parallel computing. [Pg.87]
