The following example provides information on designing of plastic structural products to take static loads. It will be a structural problem common to a number of different structures to show how the different structural requirements will affect the choice designers have to make. The design problem will be a roof section that may be used for anything from a work shed, to a house, to a vehicle, or even to a simple weather shelter. [Pg.491]

The analysis begins with a definition of the function that a roof performs. A roof is the overhead product of a structure intended to [Pg.491]

The roof must be able to shed water that falls on it, although it need not be waterproof in the sense of being a waterproof membrane structure. The roof surface is exposed to sun, wind and driven debris and must be resistant to erosion by the action of sunlight and the abrasive action of wind driven debris. In most cases the roof is insulated thermally to prevent heat loss in cold weather and heat input during warm weather. Obviously, not all roof requirements apply to all roof situations, but most of them do so you can set up your own requirements. [Pg.492]

The example of the roof structure represents the simplest type of problem in static loading in that the loads are clearly long term and well defined. Creep effects can be easily predicted and the structure can be designed with a sufficiently large safety factor to avoid the probability of failure (Chapter 7). [Pg.494]

A work targeted specifically to civil infi astructure application has reported mechanical data on freeze-thaw tests conducted on isophthalic polyester and vinyl ester pultruded/glass fiber RPs (Chapter 3). Specimens were aged in accordance with ASTM C666 (namely, 40F to OF followed by a hold at OF and a ramp up to 40F followed by a hold) while submerged in 2% sodium chloride and water. Specimens were removed after every 50 cycles and tested in ASTM 3-point flexure mode. The results clearly indicated a reduction in flexure strength and modulus after 300 cycles. [Pg.495]

Floating Roof. Floating roofs can be used as shown in Fig. 9.2a. [Pg.260]

This eliminates the vapor space but sealing the edge can be a problem. Double seals can help and sometimes a fixed roof is also added above the floating roof to help capture any leaks from the seal. However in this case, the space between the fixed and floating roof now breathes and an inert gas purge of this space would typically be used. The inert gas would be vented to atmosphere after treatment. [Pg.262]

Flexible membrane. Another method to stop the vapor space breathing to atmosphere is to use a tank with a flexible membrane in the roof, Fig. 9.26. [Pg.262]

Waterproofing, whether it has to do with protecting civil engineering structures or roofs or terraces. Poured asphalt, often placed in layers with kraft paper, oxidized bitumen or modified bitumen can be used, generally with copolymer. The modified bitumen are used for the making prefabricated multi-layer waterproofing composites. [Pg.289]

To reduce these losses, the crude oils are stored in floating roof tanks. [Pg.319]

Sheets of galvanised iron are used for roofing, guttering and the like. Alloys of zinc, notably brass, are used extensively. The metal is used m wet and dry Leclanche batteries. [Pg.418]

In professional laboratories fume hoods are big metal boxes resting on counter tops and are connected by ducts to blower motors on the roof of the facility. The blower motor is constantly sucking the air from the hoods to the outside so that chemists will not be exposed to the vapors of chemicals they are working with inside the hood. The same precautions are taken by non-dead underground chemists. [Pg.22]
