Roofing felts

Sheet form, composed of organic roofing felt, saturated with asphalt and coating on both sides with asphalt compound that may or may not contain mineral stabiHzer, surfaced with powdered talc, mica, or other tine mineral matter to prevent sticking. Classified, in mineral net mass per unit area of roofing, as Type I, 1943 g/m (39.8 lb/100 fC) Type II, 2666 g/m (54.6 lb/100 fC) Type III, 2495 g/m (51.1 lb/100 fC) and Type IV, 1943 g/m (39.8 Ib/lOOfC). 

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Liquid elastomeric treatments include neoprene, polyurethanes, and blends of these or epoxies with bituminous materials. Among the commonly used precured elastomeric sheet materials are neoprene, polyisobutylene, EPDM mbber, and plasticized PVC. Built-up roofing constitutes several pHes of a saturated roofing felt (low melt, flexible asphalt saturant) with each ply mopped in place and the stmcture covered by air-blown asphalts of from 60° to 105°C softening point, with the hardness selected depending primarily on roof slope. Finally, there is an invoice from the firm VEDAG Vereinigte Dach-pappen-Fabriken Aktiengesellschaft (United Roofing-Felt Factories, Incorporated) dated July 28, 1943, with the subject Auschwitz-crematorium referring to completed sealing work for the disinfestation facility (emphasis added) which was carried out between May 21 and July 16, 1943, cf. Fig. 30.[203]... 

Illustration 2 shows the floor plan of the crematorium as it exists today.43 After the war, it is claimed the roof was recovered with roofing felt, which concealed the Zyklon B hatches of this gas chamber . Glass fiber mats and textiles are utilized in the manufacture of bituminous roofing felt and for carpet backing. Glass fiber textiles are also used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards and in the manufacture of grinding disks. Since they are non-inflammable, glass fibers are incorporated into noncombustible textiles such as fireprottf curtain fabrics.

The extra cost for a 25 flame spread rated foam often causes the buyer to think twice and reconsider the use of a polyurethane foam. The requirement for a 25 flame spread foam in roofing seems particularly inappropriate since unregulated asphalt, tar, and roofing felts would be permitted and at no penalty whatsoever. 

The earliest machine was a four-sided Armorbelt pressure tunnel built in 1958. This machine produced a continuous rectangular block of urethane foam which was cut to length and multiple sawed to desired thicknesses and roofing felt was laminated to the cut slabs. This line of machinery was soon followed by machines capable of pressures up to 5 psi (0.35 Kg/sq. cm) and panel widths to 9 ft. (2.74 meters) (See Figure 5).

Phenol is the main metabolite of benzene. It occurs mainly in foamed organic products, plastics, adhesives, tar and tarred roofing felt. Ply-A term to denote the number of layers of roofing felt, veneer in plywood, or layers in built-up materials, in any finished piece of such material. 

The basic parts of a roof are the deck, the thermal barrier (insulation), and the impervious roofing membrane that seals the roof complex structure. The built-up roofing membrane is made of (1) bitumen (asphalt) or other more modern materials, (2) the roofing felts (reinforcement), and (3) the aggregates for protection of bitumen against ultraviolent light and oxidation. 

Properties and Uses. Asphalt paints have good resistance to weathering, temperature fluctuation, condensation, aging, and also have good anticorrosion properties. They adhere well to metallic substrates, asphalt, and roofing felt. 

Dichloroethane is used in the production of building protection agents, roofing felts, and cold asphalt. It is used as an extracting agent for alkaloids and ethereal oils. 

Dichloropropane [78-87-5] is a solvent for bitumen, asphalt, and tar in the production of road-surfacing materials, building protective agents, and roofing felts. 

For technical applications, PMB with a relatively low polymer content (3-5 %) is used for road construction mixtures with a polymer content of 15-20 % are employed as roofing felts [4-22, 4-35, 4-36]. 

The half life time at 200 °C for EPM, EPDM, SBS, and BR is less than one minute. For HD-PE and SEBS the half life times range from eight to twenty minutes. Thus, any of these polymers might be oxidized to some extent during the production of asphalt (bitumen/ mineral) mixtures or roofing felts. Extrapolation to lower temperatures shows that EPM and BR still have low oxidation stability, while the other polymers are sufficiently stable, but they all have lower LTO stability than bitumen. 

During the oxidation process long-life radicals are formed, which are mesomerically stabilized. These radicals can induce the oxidation of bitumen binder in the road surface or roofing felt, even at low temperatures under the influence of UV radiation. Moreover temperatures up to 60 °C or 80 °C may be reached at the surfaces of roads or roofing felts as a result of the IR radiation in sunlight. However, the energetic UV rays can only penetrate the surface for a few micrometers due to the dark color of the bitumen.
