Work on fragile roofs

Fragile materials must be identified before work begins. Where identified, a risk assessment must be carried out in order to provide a safe system of work which complies vdth the guidance in HSG 33, and which takes into account the nature of the work, access/egress and the need for protection of the area below. Suitable means of access, such as roof ladders, crawling boards, scaffolding and staging must be provided. [Pg.228]

Where access is possible alongside fragile materials such as roof lights, covers will be needed or the fragile material will have to be fenced off. [Pg.228]

Barriers and signs must be provided so as to isolate the area below fragile materials while work is in progress. [Pg.228]

Precautions must also be taken to prevent falls due to openings, corners, breaks, edges, open joisting, holes in platforms for ladders, sloping roofs and work on or near fragile roof materials. [Pg.59]
