SBC is a thermoplastic mbber and does not need to be vulcanised. It finds widespread use in footwear, adhesives, bitumen modification and sealants. Its thermoplastic nature allows it to be recycled. DSC analysis of the glass transition, it was found that the method is not universally applicable to the analysis of all roofing membrane materials. Difficulties were encountered in determining 7 of the polymer-modified bitumens. The use of coal tar pitch and/or bitumen in BURs has declined with the introduction of modified, petroleum-derived asphalt heated to 480 F as a sealer. The asphalts have several advantages over coal tar pitch, not the least of which relates to the reduction in skin irritation. Although asphalt possesses similar flow characteristics to pitch, it does not possess the same level of resistance to ponded water therefore, coal tars continue to be used, especially as a priming layer over the roofing felt. Nowadays, most coal tar pitch is so-called type-III bitumen, low fuming , no-burn coal tar derivative, which contains reduced amounts of irritants. [Pg.1089]

The insulation system for pitched roofs usually provides the advantage of a continuous, homogeneous insulating layer with an economy in construction. Bitumen (asphalt) as well as its different versions modified with various polymers and a number of different roofing membranes, i.e., preformed or liquid applied sheets of PVC, terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM), chlorosulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon), PU, butyl rubber, polychloroprene (Neoprene) [36], all have been used as insulating layers. [Pg.52]
