Waterproofing, whether it has to do with protecting civil engineering structures or roofs or terraces. Poured asphalt, often placed in layers with kraft paper, oxidized bitumen or modified bitumen can be used, generally with copolymer. The modified bitumen are used for the making prefabricated multi-layer waterproofing composites. 

Three types of asphalt-based roofing materials are used in the membrane roofing market built-up roofing (BUR), modified bitumen membranes, and mopping asphalt. BUR represents about 33% of the membrane roofing market and modified bitumen has about 16% of the total market.

PVC and PE have played a major role in the shift of early roof waterproofing technology and materials. After the introduction of elastomeric and other thermoplastic materials, flexible membranes of polychloroprene (Neoprene) rubber, butyl rubber and Hypalon were used. Later on, liquid PU, solvent-based liquid acrylate and liquid EPDM systems, in addition to new materials like SBS modified bitumens, were also used in the management of roofing. All fall into the single-ply family of roofing, which offers a much cleaner, safer, energy-efficient and cost-effective alternative to built-up roofs.

SBC is a thermoplastic mbber and does not need to be vulcanised. It finds widespread use in footwear, adhesives, bitumen modification and sealants. Its thermoplastic nature allows it to be recycled. The modified bitumens have elastic properties and are used for roofing membranes and for roads. 

SBCs are used to produce modified bitumen for roofing and roads (43 %), footwear (43 %), adhesives (11%) and a wide variety of technical goods (3 %).

Irrespective of the system, new materials have been introduced as alternatives to the older ones (see Table 5). For example, some shingles are made of modified bitumen instead of blown bitumen. Asphalt-saturated organic felt is increasingly being replaced by asphalt-impregnated glass fiber mat in the manufacture of shingles and as felt plies in BUR. In the new systems, more factory prefabrication and less work atop the roof is involved than in the traditional roofs.

DSC analysis of the glass transition, it was found that the method is not universally applicable to the analysis of all roofing membrane materials. Difficulties were encountered in determining 7 of the polymer-modified bitumens. Consequently, it was recommended that although DSC can have utility for certain roofing membrane materials and specific investigation, it is not a universal method for the type of material under investigation. 

The use of coal tar pitch and/or bitumen in BURs has declined with the introduction of modified, petroleum-derived asphalt heated to 480 F as a sealer. The asphalts have several advantages over coal tar pitch, not the least of which relates to the reduction in skin irritation. Although asphalt possesses similar flow characteristics to pitch, it does not possess the same level of resistance to ponded water therefore, coal tars continue to be used, especially as a priming layer over the roofing felt. Nowadays, most coal tar pitch is so-called type-III bitumen, low fuming , no-burn coal tar derivative, which contains reduced amounts of irritants. 

The insulation system for pitched roofs usually provides the advantage of a continuous, homogeneous insulating layer with an economy in construction. Bitumen (asphalt) as well as its different versions modified with various polymers and a number of different roofing membranes, i.e., preformed or liquid applied sheets of PVC, terpolymer of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM), chlorosulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon), PU, butyl rubber, polychloroprene (Neoprene) [36], all have been used as insulating layers.
