Extruded Rigid Foa.m. In addition to low temperature thermal insulation, foamed PSs are used for insulation against ambient temperatures in the form of perimeter insulation and insulation under floors and in walls and roofs. The upside-down roof system has been patented (256), in which foamed plastic such as Styrofoam (Dow) plastic foam is appHed above the tar-paper vapor seal, thereby protecting the tar paper from extreme thermal stresses that cause cracking. The foam is covered with gravel or some other wear-resistant topping (see Roofing materials). [Pg.527]

Development of a glossy, aesthetic and unpainted roof module on the Smart Roadster by DaimlerChrysler AG s Smart. The two-piece, removable roof, built by ArvinMeritor, is surfaced with a thermoformable three-layer film (Lexan by GE Plastics) that can be co-moulded with either thermoplastic or thermoset substrates. The film exhibits 95% gloss retention after the equivalent of 10 years of Florida sun exposure. Weight saving is 50% versus a painted steel roof system. [Pg.850]

Figure 7-87. These roofing panels made from Azloy (GE Plastics Azdel, a thermoplastic RP) were featured on the GE Living Environmental Concept House seen in Chapter 1. These panels were designed to provide the highest fiame and fire protection listing given for roofing systems as well as to allow easy installation and excellent weatherability. Figure 7-87. The assembly process described above using the press is not necessary in case non-traditional or plastic materials are to be used. For such materials, the cut panel takes a different path towards an ultrasonic welding machine for Inserting a joining strip that will connect the panel to the floor and roof systems In the main assembly line. [Pg.67]

In the mid-to-late 1980s, growth estimates of the use of polystyrene and polyurethane ceUular plastic insulation materials and products were a healthy 10% per year and greater for phenoHc (40,41). The principal appHcation where strongest growth was forecast for these types was for roofing, especially single-membrane systems (42). [Pg.336]

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Liquid elastomeric treatments include neoprene, polyurethanes, and blends of these or epoxies with bituminous materials. Among the commonly used precured elastomeric sheet materials are neoprene, polyisobutylene, EPDM mbber, and plasticized PVC. Polyethylene and PVC films and nonwoven plastic or glass fabric coated with bituminous materials also find use (78). Because these... [Pg.310]

Goal Tar. In roofing, coal tar is used as mopping bitumen in between 15 and 20% of the BUR roofs installed. Coal-tar pitch and asphalt are considered incompatible and should not be mixed. If mixed, an oily exudate is formed that plasticizes the bitumen, and the mixture remains soft and does not weather well. For this reason, if coal tar is used in BUR systems the felts must be coal-tar saturated. There has been some success using asphalt-coated fiber-glass mat felts with coal-tar pitch. However, this has only been done for a limited number of years so the actual compatibiHty is not fully known. [Pg.321]

In the deep south of the United States, swimming pools are often solar heated. Plastic pipe collectors are in common use. Rows of black plastic pipes are laid on the south-facing roof of the house. The pipes are plumbed so that the pool pump can circulate some of the pool water through the pipes. The black pipes adsorb the solar heat and warm the water. In Florida a well-engineered system allows the use of pool a month or so earlier in the spring and a similar time later in the fall. Few solar systems are capable of heating the pool to a satisfactory temperature all year round. People who like to swim all year round use gas, oil or electric heat pump heaters in addition to their solar heaters. [Pg.36]
