Polyurethane Roof Coatings

Polyurethane roof coatings can be applied by trowel (Figure 4.8), squeegee or by spray. The product is supplied in two components. It may be used on areas exposed to traffic as well as non-trafficked roofs. The thickness of the cured system is approximately 1 mm.

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Many technical textiles are finished with a heavy polymeric coating of, e.g., poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polyurethane, or silicone, which effectively masks the textile fabric with a smooth surface. One exemplary application of coated textiles, where easy or self-attained cleanability is highly required, is the construction of textile roofs in modem architecture. The present solution to decrease dirt take-up is to apply hydrophobic topcoats, i.e. layers of lacquer of approx. 5 jm thickness, to the coated fabrics. However, the performance of these conventional topcoats with regard to cleanability is not sufficient. The approaches to the creation of superhydrophobic surfaces by means of micro-rough surfaces as discussed in Section 6.1 refer to the texture of textile fabrics as well as the actual fiber surfaces, and are not necessarily applicable to coated textiles. 

Contact adhesives (polychloroprene, nitrile, or polyurethane rubber) are used for fitting vinyl roofs, roof linings, sound-deadening mats (where they are not already incorporated in the primer-coated body), and carpets. More recent prefabricated roof constructions are designed for bonding with special emulsions. 

An environmentally friendly commercial roofing system has been commercially developed by West Development Group [67]. The roof comprises a soy-based spray polyurethane (PU) foam with a sprayable solvent-free silicone top coat containing recycled EPDM granules forming a water-resistant, seamless, self-flashing seal.
