Secondary Treatments and Uses. Insulation boards normally have few secondary treatments. Some boards may receive a coating of primer and others may be laminated into panels of several thicknesses. Insulation boards are used for economical, insulative wall paneling, ceiling tiles, bulletin boards, and similar uses. Laminated panels are used for insulative panels, usually as roof decking or insulation under built-up roofing. 

Built-Up Roofing. Built-up roofing (BUR) is a continuous-membrane covering manufactured on-site from alternate layers of bitumen, bitumen-saturated or coated felts, or asphalt-impregnated glass mats and surfacings. These membranes are generally appHed with hot bitumens or cold apphed bituminous adhesives (qv).

Built-up roofing constitutes several pHes of a saturated roofing felt (low melt, flexible asphalt saturant) with each ply mopped in place and the stmcture covered by air-blown asphalts of from 60° to 105°C softening point, with the hardness selected depending primarily on roof slope. These roofs are usually surfaced with mineral aggregates. 

Three types of asphalt-based roofing materials are used in the membrane roofing market built-up roofing (BUR), modified bitumen membranes, and mopping asphalt. BUR represents about 33% of the membrane roofing market and modified bitumen has about 16% of the total market.

In industrial and commercial construction, numerous building assemblies have been used successfully for many years. As in residential insulation, roof insulation is the most effective. The roof deck is usually flat and requires new waterproofing. In conventional overdeck assembly, the insulation is located above the roof deck structure and is covered by the built-up roof. Other techniques for roof insulation include membrane assemblies (IRMA) [102], underdeck assemblies, and structural panel assemblies.
