After a lifetime of 10-20 years, the roofing sheets have to be replaced by new ones, which is normally done by the same firm(s). Therefore, the recycling of used roofing sheets is rather easy fi-om the logistic point of view and has been common practice for many years. New PVC roofing sheets may contain up to... [Pg.728]

Emissions During Exterior End Use. When flexible PVC is used in exterior appHcations plasticizer loss may occur due to a number of processes which include evaporation, microbial attack, hydrolysis, degradation, exudation, and extraction. It is not possible, due to this wide variety of contribution processes, to assess theoretically the rate of plasticizer loss by exposure outdoors. It is necessary, therefore, to carry out actual measurements over extended periods in real life situations. Litde suitable data have been pubHshed with the exception of some studies on roofing sheet (47). The data from roofing sheet has been used to estimate the plasticizer losses from all outdoor appHcations. This estimate may weU be too high because of the extrapolation involved. Much of this extracted plasticizer does not end up in the environment because considerable degradation takes place during the extraction process. [Pg.132]

A major use of PVC in the building industry is for roofing sheets. These sheets are produced on calenders and contain in most cases two plasticized PVC foils that are reinforced by glass fiber or polyester fabrics. The used sheets show different properties, depending on whether they are applied under direct influence of light and weather conditions and on the fact that in some cases these sheets on the roof are loaded with... [Pg.728]

As part of the discussion on the use of textile construction membranes, it should be made clear what happens at end-of-Ufe for materials used so far for building construction. Thermoplastic membrane components like PVC can be processed after each utilization period under certain conditions and be supplied for reuse in the raw material cycle. Leading European manufacturers of PVC/PES membranes and roofing sheets have united in order to recycle post-consumer waste, disused membranes and PVC materials (ref. Vinyl) in most modem plants with approved thermo-physical procedures. The output of this recycling process is then used for new products. An important factor in the operation of these and other environmental raw-material recovery procedures is logistics, which includes the materials being carefully prepared and sorted prior to delivery. The processing plants are potentially able to achieve a turnover of more than one ton per hour (ref. recovinyl). [Pg.65]

BP. These nitrile alloy membranes are compounded from PVC, flexibilized by the addition of butadiene—acrylonitrile copolymers, PVC, and other proprietary ingredients. Typically reinforced with polyester scrim, NBP membranes are 1 mm thick and have a width of 1.5 m. They ate ptedominandy used in mechanically fastened roofing systems. NBP membranes exhibit excellent teat and puncture resistance as well as good weatherabihty, and remain flexible at low temperatures. They ate resistant to most chemicals but ate sensitive to aromatic hydrocarbons. The sheet is usually offered in light colors. The physical characteristics of NBP membranes have been described (15). [Pg.214]

The greater portion of PVC is installed in the mechanically fastened roofing system a lesser portion is installed in fully adhered appHcations. Although PVC was once heavily used in ballasted roofing systems, there are only a small number installed in the 1990s. Fleece-back membrane is popular in the PVC constmction for both fully adhered appHcations as well as in appHcations where a separator sheet is needed. PVCs ate resistant to vafious weather conditions, bactefial growth, and industfial chemicals. These membranes ate chemically incompatible with bituminous materials. PVCs ate offered in a variety of colors. The physical characteristics of a PVC membrane have been described (15). [Pg.214]

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Liquid elastomeric treatments include neoprene, polyurethanes, and blends of these or epoxies with bituminous materials. Among the commonly used precured elastomeric sheet materials are neoprene, polyisobutylene, EPDM mbber, and plasticized PVC. Polyethylene and PVC films and nonwoven plastic or glass fabric coated with bituminous materials also find use (78). Because these... [Pg.310]

A composition of materials has been described that can be extruded into sheets to form panels to create a roofing system (38). The panels are capable to interlock mutually in order to provide a substantially weatherproof alignment The sheet member has a top layer made of ASA and a bottom layer made of formulated PVC. The two layers are extruded and bonded by pressure or lamination or... [Pg.342]
