Ricinoleic acid (18 1 with an hydroxyl group on Cl2) from Ricims communis, the castor oil plant. Castor oil, containing 90% of ricinoleic acid, is poorly digested (because of the hydroxyl group) and acts as a lubricant and a slight irritant to the intestines, hence its use to relieve constipation. [Pg.230]

Natural Ethoxylated Fats, Oils, and Waxes. Castor oil (qv) is a triglyceride high in ricinoleic esters. Ethoxylation in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to a polyoxyethylene content of 60—70 wt % yields water-soluble surfactants (Table 20). Because alkaline catalysts also effect transesterification, ethoxylated castor oil surfactants are complex mixtures with components resulting from transesterification and subsequent ethoxylation at the available hydroxyl groups. The ethoxylates are pale amber liquids of specific gravity just above 1.0 at room temperature. They are hydrophilic emulsifiers, dispersants, lubricants, and solubilizers used as textile additives and finishing agents, as well as in paper (qv) and leather (qv) manufacture. [Pg.251]

The Dow Chemical Company, Castor Oil, Inc., and the USD A Western Regional Research Center are collaborating to develop the castor plant as a suitable oilseed for specialty oils that can be converted into lubricants, coatings, foams, adhesives, and engineering thermoplastics. Castor oil already contains ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid used in many industrial applications, but project partners hope to produce other industrially desirable fatty acids within the castor bean. [Pg.883]

The variety of substances used as additives in polymers is considerable. For example, the fillers may include china clay, various forms of calcium carbonate, talc, silicas (diatomaceous silica), silicates, carbon black, etc. The impact modifiers typically include other polymers. Plasticizers include certain polymers with low (oligomers), dialkyl phthalates, dialkyl sebacates, chlorinated paraffin waxes, liquid paraffinic fractions, oil extracts, etc. Heat stabilizers include heavy metals salts such as basic lead carbonate, basic lead sulfate, dibasic lead phosphite (also acting as a light stabilizer), dibasic lead phthalate, stearates, ricinoleates, palmitates and octanoates of cadmium and barium, epoxide resins and oils, amines, diphenylurea, 2-phenylindole, aminocrotonates. The antioxidants include tris-nonyl phenyl phosphite, 2,6-di-ferf-butyl-p-cresol (BHT), octadecyl-3,5-di-terf-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate, etc. The UV stabilizers include modified benzophenones and benzotriazoles. Processing lubricants include calcium stearate, stearic acid, lead stearate, various wax derivatives, glyceryl esters and long-chain acids. Fire retardants include antimony oxide, some pyrophosphates, etc. [Pg.22]

The use of castor oil in lubricants is particularly important, both historically and currently. Castor oil is a triglyceride with a very high, 90%, content of the fatty acid, ricinoleic acid, an unusual fatty acid, containing one double bond and a hydroxyl group, as in Fig. 6.10. [Pg.207]

The free hydroxyl group in ricinoleic acid is able to interact with polar groups on metal surfaces, thereby giving superior lubricity. The largely mono-ene nature of castor oil gives it low-temperature fluidity without the loss of oxidative stability of polyunsaturates. Castor oil is used in specialist two-stroke applications and can be modified for use in greases. [Pg.207]

In addition to carboxylic acid salts, other effective lubricity additives that the chemist will work with are esters of hydroxyfatty acids, non-ionic surface agents, dibasic acids, and additives from substituted fatty acids. Although this is not a complete list, its contents are the most effective from a cost perspective and are typically used in the industry. The oleate of ricinoleic acid dimer is an example of a hydroxyfatty acid prepared from ricinoleic acid oligomer with acid chloride in the presence of pyridine, as shown in Figure 2.4. [Pg.18]

The castor plant Ricinus communis) is a coarse herb of the spurge family Euphorbiaceae. When processed, the seed syn. castor bean yields half its weight in a triglyceride oil that is, uniquely, up to 85% ricinoleic acid. The oil is used as an ingredient or precursor in the manufacture of paints, varnishes, resins, synthetic fibres, lubricants, polishes, cosmetics, and many other materials. [Pg.38]

The low-volatility, flame-resistant phosphoric acid esters have maintained their position in products subjected to high levels of mechanical strain such as conveyor belts. Triphenyl phosphate, used only for molding compounds made of cellulose esters, is a practically noncombustible product that is not soluble in benzine. Tricresyl phosphate (TCP) is a flame-retardant plasticizer for PVC products subjected to heavy mechanical stress. The esters of the aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (adipic, azelaic, and sebacic acid) are used as plasticizers for PVC and PVAC. These products are resistant to cold and light. The esters of higher fatty acids such as pelargonates, laurates, palmitates, stearates, and ricinoleates are, strictly speaking, not plasticizers, but are rather used as extenders, secondary plasticizers, or lubricants. [Pg.131]
