Castor oil lubricants

Because of these factors, the lubrication requirements of aircraft are generally very critical. Only in a few cases can lubricants developed for non-aircraft applications be used satisfactorily in aircraft. This has not always been the case the mineral oil or castor oil lubricants used in the earliest aircraft were all standard automotive or marine products. [Pg.346]

Castor oil lubricants in rotary engines gave no problems, for reasons explained later, but long-range bombers and flying boats did not use rotary engines and then-needs led to a steady improvement in engine lubricant quality. [Pg.346]

HOaQCHjlfiCOiH, CSH14O4. Important dicarboxylic acid obtained by oxidizing ricino-leic acid (from castor oil) also obtained by oxidation of cyclo-octene or cyclo-octadiene formerly obtained from cork. Used in the formation of alkyd resins and polyamides. Esters are used as plasticizers and heavy duty lubricants and oils. [Pg.375]

Lithium hydroxide with 12-hydroxy-stearic acid (or hydrogenated castor oil) they form the family of lithium greases very commonly used for general lubrication and bearing lubrication. [Pg.281]

Natural Ethoxylated Fats, Oils, and Waxes. Castor oil (qv) is a triglyceride high in ticinoleic esters. Ethoxylation in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to a polyoxyethylene content of 60—70 wt % yields water-soluble surfactants (Table 20). Because alkaline catalysts also effect transestenfication, ethoxylated castor oil surfactants are complex mixtures with components resulting from transesterrfication and subsequent ethoxylation at the available hydroxyl groups. The ethoxylates are pale amber Hquids of specific gravity just above 1.0 at room temperature. They are hydrophilic emulsifiers, dispersants, lubricants, and solubilizers used as textile additives and finishing agents, as well as in paper (qv) and leather (qv) manufacture. [Pg.251]

Oxidized castor oils are excellent nonmigrating, nonvolatile plasticizers (qv) for ceUulosic resins, poly(vinyl butyral), polyamides, shellac, and natural and synthetic mbber (see Rubber, natural). The high viscosity products are also used as tackifiers in gasket compounds and adhesives (qv) because of good oil and solvent resistance. They also serve as excellent pigment grinding media and as a base for inks (qv), lubricating oils, and hydrauHc oils (62). [Pg.155]

Mixtures containing sulfated castor oil were used to increase the lubricity of water base drilling fluids (123). Sulfated castor oil is also used in dishwashing compounds as a hand softener. A typical cleaning composition contains sodium dodecylben2ene sulfonate, sulfated castor oil, ethanol, and water. A sulfated derivative of castor oil is used as a dispersant for plaster of Paris, reducing the water needed to form a plastic slurry (124). Pesticide emulsions can be stabilized using ethoxylated castor oil (125). [Pg.157]

LesquereUa is an oilseed crop that has been mentioned as a potential industrial crop but is not yet grown in significant quantities. Castor beans have been a crop in the United States and provide a weU-known lubricating product, castor oil [8001-79-4]. However, castor is grown only in small quantities and most of the castor used in the United States is imported from Bra2il (11). [Pg.449]

Stearic acid and metal stearates such as calcium stearate are generally used as lubricants at a rate of about 1-3% on the total compound. Waxes such as camauba and ceresin or oils such as castor oil may also be used for this purpose. [Pg.647]

Metal stearates such as zinc, magnesium or aluminium stearates are commonly used as lubricants at about 1 % concentration. Other materials that have been used successfully include oxidised paraffin wax and sulphonated castor oil. [Pg.672]

Ricinoleic acid (18 1 with an hydroxyl group on Cl2) from Ricims communis, the castor oil plant. Castor oil, containing 90% of ricinoleic acid, is poorly digested (because of the hydroxyl group) and acts as a lubricant and a slight irritant to the intestines, hence its use to relieve constipation. [Pg.230]

The principal use of the plant is lor the oil contained in the seeds, This oil is pressed out without healing the seeds. The particular properties make this oil valuable for specialized uses, such as low temperature lubrication. It is an important constituent of hydraulic brake fluid and other fluids where the degree of compressibility is important- Castor oil also finds medical uses, as an ingredient of special soaps, and in the preparation of some lexiile dyes. Ricin, an alkaloid present in castor oil. also has been used in insecticides. Prior lo the preparation of refined castor oil for medical purposes, ricin must be removed. [Pg.303]
