External Plasticizers. There are two distinct groups of external plasticizers. A primary plasticizer, when added to a polymer, causes the properties of elongation and softness of the polymer to be increased. These changes are brought about by mechanisms described below. A secondary plasticizer, when added to the polymer alone, does not bring about these changes and may have limited compatibiUty with the polymer. However, when added to the polymer in combination with a primary plasticizer, secondary plasticizers enhance the plasticizing performance of the primary plasticizer. For this reason secondary plasticizers are also known as extenders. 

A 5g sample, from which a few drops had been taken, was stored for four years. It was then observed to have become viscous and was set aside for disposal. Within three days it blew off the cap of its bottle, and that of a plastic secondary container. The contents had become a solid foam. Trace contamination cannot be absolutely excluded, but this looks like an autocatalytic Friedel Crafts polymerisation of a benzyl halide. It would represent serious danger on a larger scale.

Mutual miscibility between plasticizers and polymers is an important criterion from a practical point of view. If a polymer is soluble in a plasticizer at a high concentration of the polymer, the plasticizer is said to be a primary plasticizer. Primary plasticizers should gel the polymer rapidly in the normal processing temperature range and should not exude from the plasticized material. Secondary plasticizers, on the other hand, have lower gelation capacity and limited compatibility with the polymer. In this case, two phases are present after plasticization process—one phase where the polymer is only slightly plasticized, and one phase where it is completely plasticized. Polymers plasticized with secondary plasticizers do not, therefore, deform homogeneously when stressed as compared to primary plasticizers. The deformation appears only in the plasticizer-rich phase and the mechanical properties of the system are poor. Unlike primary plasticizers, secondary plasticizers cannot be used alone and are usually employed in combination with a primary plasticizer.

Plasticizers can also be characterized by the concentrations in which they are used. Primary plasticizers are the products that are either used as the sole plasticizer in the system, or the major plasticizer that is used in plasticizer blends. Secondary plasticizers are used in smaller quantities in a blend with a primary plasticizer. Secondary plasticizers are generally added to improve a specific property such as low temperature flexibility, reduced flanunability, improved processing, or reduced costs. For instance in shoe soles, it is a common practice to incorporate a small amount of the plasticizer di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) as a secondary plasticizer together with a primary general-purpose (GP) plasticizer such as DINP to give improvements in low temperature...
