Hexylene glycol

In addition to DAA s use in the production of MIBK, DAA also finds use as a specialty reaction intermediate. Hydrogenation of DAA at 100°C and 30 MPa (83) yields hexylene glycol ( 1.43/kg, October 1994), widely used in castor oil-based hydrauhc brake fluids and as a solvent. Reaction of /)-phenetidine [156-43-4] with DAA synthesizes Monsanto s Santoquin (ethoxyquin) [91-53-2] (149), an antioxidant used in animal feeds and also as a mbber additive. Diacetone alcohol (acetone-free) was available at 1.32/kg as of October 1994. 

The addition of an a-hydroxycarboxyhc acid to a tetraethylene, propylene, diethjiene, or hexylene glycol titanate gives water-soluble complexes suitable for gelling aqueous solutions of hydroxyl polymers, such as poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), or cellulose (qv) derivatives. These are useful as binding agents for glass fibers, clays (qv), and paper coatings (85). 

U.S. Borax Research Corp., Anaheim, California, markets several borate esters under the trademark BORESTER. These include triethanolamine borate (BORESTER 20), tricresyl borate (m- and p-isomers) (BORESTER 8), and the biborate (4) (BORESTER 7). Whereas the chemical name for (4) is given in Table 1, it is commonly referred to as trihexylene glycol biborate [26545-48-2] and is prepared by the reaction of two moles of boric acid and three moles of hexylene glycol. 

With one exception no other high molecular weight linear polyesters have achieved any sort of commercial significance for films and fibres. The one exception is the condensation polymer of dimethyl terephthalate and 1,4-cyclo-hexylene glycol (also known as 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol) (Figure 25.19).
