Preventive Methods

Use of Liners. The use of impermeable liners and membranes, often called release prevention barriers (RPBs) under tanks, may be the most effective leak detection and prevention method. On new tanks, it is relatively easy to install these systems, and large numbers of tanks are being built with this type of system in the 1990s. For existing tanks, however, it would be very costiy if not impractical to install liners. For existing tanks, the combination of other methods as well as an effective inspection program can be more effective as a substitute for a release prevention barrier. 

Although the EPAs policy does not consider recycling or treatment as actual pollution prevention methods per se, these methods present an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste that might otheiwise be discharged into the environment. Clearly, the definition of pollution prevention and its synonyms (e.g., waste minimization) must be understood to fully appreciate and apply these techniques. 

Potential tax incentives. In an effort to promote pollution prevention, taxes may eventually need to be levied to encourage waste generators to consider reduction programs. Conversely, tax breaks could be developed for corporations that utilize pollution-prevention methods to foster pollution prevention.

The plant engineer and his maintenance manager will establish whoever carries out the work, basic strategy, programming and procedures. Inspection checklists and record sheets are necessary for systematic location of critical elements/potential defects and setting out frequencies of inspection. Computers and work processors are an obvious aid to effective maintenance management. Inspection-based preventive methods are demonstrably cost effective. 

Prevention Methods of prevention already summarised may be used singly or in combination. Elimination of sulphur and certain of its compounds are most effective but more recently more resistant materials such as polythene or asbestos are used to replace iron and concrete where acid corrosion in severe. 

Scale prevention methods include operating at low conversion and chemical pretreatment. Acid injection to convert COs to CO2 is commonly used, but cellulosic membranes require operation at pH 4 to 7 to prevent hydrolysis. Sulfuric acid is commonly used at a dosing of 0.24 mg/L while hydrochloric acid is to be avoided to minimize corrosion. Acid addition will precipitate aluminum hydroxide. Water softening upstream of the RO By using lime and sodium zeolites will precipitate calcium and magnesium hydroxides and entrap some silica. Antisealant compounds such as sodium hexametaphosphate, EDTA, and polymers are also commonly added to encapsulate potential precipitants. Oxidant addition precipitates metal oxides for particle removal (converting soluble ferrous Fe ions to insoluble ferric Fe ions). 

Identifying patients at high risk for development of acute renal failure and implementing preventive methods to decrease its occurrence or severity is critical. 

The overall goals in recovery from addiction are the same for all substances and include improved coping skills and relapse prevention. Methods for accomplishing long-term sobriety include both nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic means. 

Pollution prevention practices have become part of the U.S. National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program, working in conjunction with best management practices (BMPs) to reduce potential pollutant releases. Pollution prevention methods have been shown to reduce costs as well as pollution risks through source reduction and recycling/reuse techniques.5... 

Modem science and medicine have made great strides in the previous decade in the diagnosis and study of disease. Nonetheless, early disease detection capabilities must be improved. Also, new tools are needed for the study of diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer s, heart disease, and many others to enable greater progress toward cure and prevention. Today, the field of optical biosensing is poised to develop tools that will enable earlier diagnosis and that will allow scientists to better study diseases at the molecular level, leading to the development of cures and prevention methods. 

Weed management in organic agriculture use preventive methods such as an appropriate crop rotation, precise soiled preparation before sowing crops, narrow seed spacing, etc. (Labrada 2003). Many of them include ways in which allelopathy (often together with competition) could play an important role (Fig. 14.1). 

Relapse prevention, as mentioned, is compatible with a variety of treatment models. For example, many Minnesota-model facilities have incorporated aspects of cognitive behavioral relapse prevention into their treatment and aftercare programs. There have been efforts to combine the relapse prevention model with disease-model instructions to maintain abstinence after treatment is completed. Minnesota-model relapse prevention is generally begun late in treatment and then continued into aftercare. There are numerous books and manuals that have incorporated relapse prevention methods into this particular model. 

Relapse prevention within ethnic-minority communities can look somewhat different than it does in a typical treatment center. Relapse prevention methods with ethnic-minority clients often include involvement in traditional cultural activities as part of the therapy. One important theme may be the restoration of the client into her or his rightful place within the family and the community. Another potentially important cultural issue to address with many ethnic-minority clients will be difficulties overcoming shame. Fligh-risk situations may vary across cultures, and a therapist or counselor should know the community well enough to understand cultural nuances related to risky relapse situations. 

Relapse management. Using relapse prevention methods to control drug use rather than stop it entirely. 

I recommend reading Rebpse Prevention, by G. Alan Marlatt and Judith Gordon (New York Guilford Press, 1985). Although many books have been written since this one, this is the original classic that introduced the relapse model and prevention methods we still use today. These strategies have been scientifically validated for many years now. A new edition of this book edited by Marlatt and Dennis Donovan is due out soon. 

If any one side of the fire triangle is removed, a fire will not result. In the past, the most common method for fire control was elimination of ignition sources. However, experience has shown that this is not robust enough. Current fire control prevention methods continue with elimination of ignition sources, while focusing efforts more strongly on preventing flammable mixtures. 

Asthma is considered as a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways. This inflammation causes recurrent episodes of symptoms, variable airflow limitation, and increased airway responsiveness. Prevention of asthma involves both the prevention of the initial development of asthma (= primary prevention) and the prevention of exacerbation in patients with asthma (= secondary prevention). Primary prevention methods include reducing exposure to indoor allergens, particularly domestic mites, avoidance of passive smoking, especially by infants, and avoidance of vehicle emission pollutants, largely from incomplete combustion of petrol by car engines.
