33 Other Methods of Preventing Fixing - Examined Experimentally 

Vulcanisates pre-treated by exposure to UV irradiation are influenced by the atmosphere in which the treatment is carried out. NBR treated in this way in an oxygen atmosphere did not significantly reduce in FSq, but there was remarkable increase in the FS value. This was deemed to show that the active groups such as - 

and -COOH are present near the surface of the metal and are also formed on the surface of the NBR vulcanisates during the UV treatment in air. If the UV treatment is carried out in an argon atmosphere then the NBR vulcanisates had a greatly decreased value of FS. This however would not he considered an industrial feasibility.
