Plated steel

Containers. Aerosol containers, made to withstand a certain amount of pressure, vary in both size and materials of constmction. They are manufactured from tin-plated steel, aluminum, and glass. The most popular aerosol container is the three-piece tin-plated steel container. Glass containers, which are usually plastic coated, generally have thicker walls than conventional glass jars. They are limited to a maximum size of 120 mL and are used for pharmaceutical and cosmetic aerosols. [Pg.349]

The mounting cup (ferrule for botde valves) mechanically joins the valve to the container. The mounting cup may be made from a variety of materials, but is typically tin-plated steel coated on the underside. It contains the gasket which provides the seal. Soft gasketing material is appHed wet and bonded in place or, more frequently in larger cans, cut mbber, polyethylene, or polypropylene gaskets are used. [Pg.349]

Another market appHcation for naphthenic acid is the tire industry, where cobalt naphthenate is used as an adhesion promoter (see Adhesives Tire cords). Cobalt naphthenate improves the bonding of brass-plated steel cords to mbber, presumably by suppressing the de-zincification of brass (50). Its first reported use was in 1970 and the first patent for its use was issued in 1975 (51). About 900 t of cobalt naphthenate is used worldwide as an adhesion promoter, half of it in North America. The unit value fluctuates between 8.75—13.25 /kg because of the volatility of cobalt prices. Although it is the industry standard, the use of cobalt naphthenate is declining with the advent of more economical high metal-containing substitutes. [Pg.512]

Insoluble Sulfur. In natural mbber compounds, insoluble sulfur is used for adhesion to brass-coated wire, a necessary component in steel-belted radial tires. The adhesion of mbber to the brass-plated steel cord during vulcanization improves with high sulfur levels ( 3.5%). Ordinary rhombic sulfur blooms at this dose level. Crystals of sulfur on the surface to be bonded destroy building tack and lead to premature failure of the tire. Rubber mixtures containing insoluble sulfur must be kept cool (<100°C) or the amorphous polymeric form converts to rhombic crystals. [Pg.224]

Silica. The main uses of siUca are in the treads of off-the-road tines for improved chunking and tear resistance and as a component of the bonding system for brass and 2inc-plated steel cord. These are commonly used in radial passenger and tmck tire belt skim stock. In addition the body pHes of steel radial tmck tires, hoses and belts, and footwear use significant volumes of siUca as a reinforcing filler. [Pg.245]

To complete the assembly of a cell, the interleaved electrode groups are bolted to a cov er and the cover is sealed to a container. Originally, nickel-plated steel was the predominant material for cell containers but, more recently plastic containers have been used for a considerable proportion of pocket nickel-cadmium cells. Polyethylene, high impact polystyrene, and a copolymer of propylene and ethylene have been the most widely used plastics. [Pg.547]

Solenoid magnetic separators are designed for batch-type, cyclic, and continuous operation. Devices which can use matrices of expanded metal, grooved plates, steel balls, or filamentaiy metals have been designed. Continuous separators with capacities to 600 t/h for iron ores (similar to the Brazilian hematite) are commercially available (Sala International Inc.). Selection of the method of operation is apphcation-dependent, being based on variables such as temperature, pressure, volume of magnetics in the feed, etc. [Pg.1798]

Changes observed in the composition of the rubber/brass interphase correlated well with results of adhesion tests carried out on brass-plated steel wires embedded in blocks of rubber [46]. The force required to pull the wires out of the blocks decreased steadily as vulcanization temperature increased. This effect was especially pronounced when the specimens were aged at elevated temperature and humidity for several days before the wires were pulled out of the rubber blocks. [Pg.295]

Geon and Seo [47] also determined the effect of vulcanization time on the adhesion of natural rubber to brass-plated steel. For relatively short times, there was a peak at the end of the copper profile that corresponded well with a peak in the sulfur profile. Similarly, peaks in the zinc and oxygen profiles corresponded well. These results showed that copper sulfide and zinc oxide mostly formed at short times but some evidence for formation of zinc sulfide was also obtained. For long times, the peak in the sulfur profile no longer corresponded with that in the copper profile. Instead, the peak in the sulfur profile corresponded to the peak in the zinc profile. It was concluded that the formation of zinc sulfide increased substantially at long times. An increase in vulcanization time correlated well with a decrease in the force required to pull brass-plated steel wires out of rubber blocks. [Pg.295]

In the polyacrylic synthetic fibre industry, carbonitrided molybdenum guides have been used in place of chromium plated steel because of their resistance to corrosion and erosion. Chemicals that attack molybdenum are listed in Table 5.9. [Pg.849]

Where changes in appearance are of paramount interest, as in the case of metallic and organic coatings on steel or other metals, visual examination is most desirable. To facilitate ratings on such a basis, photographic standards have been employed, as, for example, in tests on chromium-plated steel undertaken by ASTM Committee B-8 on Electrodeposited Metallic Coatings . These ratings are supplemented by a shorthand description of the nature of the deterioration observed. [Pg.1069]

Although one of the most common storage batteries is called the nickel/cadmium system ( NiCad ), correctly written (-)Cd/KOH/NiO(OH)(+), cadmium is not usually applied as a metal to form a battery anode. The same can be said with regard to the silver/cadmium [(-) Cd / KOH / AgO (+)] and the MerCad battery [(-)Cd/KOH/HgO(+)]. The metallic negative in these cases may be formed starting with cadmium hydroxide, incorporated in the pore system of a sintered nickel plate or pressed upon a nickel-plated steel current collector (pocket plates), which is subsequently converted to cadmium metal by electrochemical reduction inside the cell (type AB2C2). This operation is done by the customers when they start the application of these (storage)... [Pg.196]

The other method is cadmium electrodeposition on a nickel-plated steel foil (serving as current collector) using a plating bath containing acidified cadmium sulfate (type AB2C3). In this case the user is supplied with a battery in charged ( ready for use ) condition. [Pg.197]
