Chromium-plated steel

In the polyacrylic synthetic fibre industry, carbonitrided molybdenum guides have been used in place of chromium plated steel because of their resistance to corrosion and erosion. Chemicals that attack molybdenum are listed in Table 5.9. [Pg.849]

Where changes in appearance are of paramount interest, as in the case of metallic and organic coatings on steel or other metals, visual examination is most desirable. To facilitate ratings on such a basis, photographic standards have been employed, as, for example, in tests on chromium-plated steel undertaken by ASTM Committee B-8 on Electrodeposited Metallic Coatings . These ratings are supplemented by a shorthand description of the nature of the deterioration observed. [Pg.1069]

Alternatively, the doctor blade can impinge onto a small conveyor belt system which supports the travelling fabric. This mechanism is less commonly used than the rigid roller as it leads to reduced control of the thickness of the spread. For precision work, using very consistent cloth, an accurately machined chromium plated steel roll can replace the rubber covered roller. [Pg.201]

In a rotary screen system plastisols for compact and textured products are applied to suitable substrates continuously from seamless, cylindrical nickel screens. The plastisols are fed into the screens and pressed through perforations to the substrate by a squeegee of flexible steel or rubber the substrate is supported by a counter-pressure roller, usually of chromium-plated steel. The principle is illustrated in Figure 111. [Pg.295]

In areas where steels are in contact with the product or raw materials, stainless steels are often used as the workhorse. The production of stainless steel began in the early 1900s. The original efforts in this area were presumably based on the observation that chromium-plated steels parts were highly corrosion-resistant. The end result was the introduction of the ferritic family of stainless steels. The first documentation of the development of this class of steel began to appear in the 1920s. The first American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Specifications for stainless steels were published in 1935. [Pg.789]

Chromium plated steel (steel is mostly iron) is often used in motor car bumpers. If the bumper is scratched, will the chromium continue to protect the bumper against rusting ... [Pg.117]

Chromium = -0.74 V) is more active in the Emf Series than is iron (< )° = -0.44V), but chromium has a strong tendency to become passive (< )p = 0.2V). Hence, the potential of chromium in aqueous media is usually noble to that of steel. However, in galvanic couples of the two metals, especially in acid media, chromium is polarized below its Flade potential, so that it erfiibits an active potential. Hence, the corrosion potential of chromium-plated steel, which is always porous to some degree, is more active than that of either passive... [Pg.279]

Electroplating has become less important recently, as stainless steel has replaced chromium-plated steel. However, many items are chromium, gold or silver plated. Tin cans are steel cans that have been tin plated. [Pg.668]

The equipment consists of a chromium plated steel tube, internal diameter of 10 cm and 1.25 cm wall thickness. The tube rotates inside two SKF ball bearings. This unit is mounted on a plate formed by two U-profiles, 10 mm thickness, which is fixed on two circular profiles. This enables the whole equipment to be placed in a verti-... [Pg.730]

On the scale of potentials, zinc is more electronegative than aluminium, while cadmium has a potential very close to that of aluminium. Galvanised or cadmium-coated steel fasteners can, therefore, be used to join and assemble stmctures made from aluminium alloys. It should just be remembered that when these coatings become too worn to protect the steel and the aluminium, the previous scenario applies in which there is contact between the aluminium alloy and bare steel. Chromium-plated steel does not lead to galvanic corrosion with aluminium, as long as chromium covers the nickel underlayer however, the contact between aluminium and the nickel underlayer would lead to galvanic corrosion of aluminium. [Pg.157]
