Containers, glass

Planet Uranus) Yellow-colored glass, containing more than 1% uranium oxide and dating back to 79 A.D., has been found near Naples, Italy. Klaproth recognized an unknown element in pitchblende and attempted to isolate the metal in 1789. [Pg.200]

The procedure specifies that the standard and sample solutions should be stored in plastic containers. Why is it not a good idea to store the solutions in glass containers ... [Pg.490]

Containers. Aerosol containers, made to withstand a certain amount of pressure, vary in both size and materials of constmction. They are manufactured from tin-plated steel, aluminum, and glass. The most popular aerosol container is the three-piece tin-plated steel container. Glass containers, which are usually plastic coated, generally have thicker walls than conventional glass jars. They are limited to a maximum size of 120 mL and are used for pharmaceutical and cosmetic aerosols. [Pg.349]

The commercially available photochromic glasses contain a fine dispersion of silver halide crystallites which ate about 10 nm in diameter and about... [Pg.290]

Fused-salt electrolysis of K2NbFy is not an economically feasible process because of the low current efficiency (31). However, electrowinning has been used to obtain niobium from molten alkaU haUde electrolytes (32). The oxide is dissolved in molten alkaU haUde and is deposited in a molten metal cathode, either cadmium or zinc. The reaction is carried out in a ceramic or glass container using a carbon anode the niobium alloys with the cathode metal, from which it is freed by vacuum distillation, and the niobium powder is left behind. [Pg.23]

Aluminum chloride hexahydrate is available ia a 28% by weight (32° Be ) aqueous solution shipped ia glass carboys, tank cars, or tmcks. Crystalline hexahydrate is shipped ia glass containers or plastic-lined dmms. In 1980, 5200 metric tons of aluminum chloride hexahydrate on a 100% AlCl basis was produced ia the United States (10). [Pg.149]

Under atmospheric conditions, 3-aminophenol is the most stable of the three isomers. Both 2- and 4-aminophenol are unstable they darken on exposure to air and light and should be stored in brown glass containers, preferably in an atmosphere of nitrogen. The use of activated iron oxide in a separate cellophane bag inside the storage container (116), or the addition of staimous chloride (117), or sodium bisulfite (118) inhibits the discoloration of aminophenols. The salts, especially the hydrochlorides, are more resistant to oxidation and should be used where possible. [Pg.312]
