Real-time radiographic systems, such as the x-star from OIS. have been developed for helicopter companies to inspect complete rotor blades up to 10 meters in length [175]. Such systems use a 160 kV constant potential dual-focus tubehead. a 220 mm lo v-ab.sorption aluminum input window image intensifier tube, and an automatic manipulator movement. One of the limitations is that the component inspected has to be removed from the helicopter prior to inspection. [Pg.831]

Having a high-quality peer-level inspection program may reduce the need for frequent inspections by supervisory personnel. However, peer inspections should not replace other inspections completely. Walkthroughs by the organization s leadership demonstrate commitment to the safety programs, which is key to their continuing success. [Pg.178]

Here is an example of how this works A driver undergoes a Level 1 roadside inspection (complete driver and vehicle inspection). In the course of the inspection the officer discovers that the vehicle has a cracked windshield, and the driver has falsified his log. [Pg.561]

Inspect completed work— This is essential to determine whether what was constructed is in conformance with design. A final inspection should be preceded by ongoing inspections during the total construction phase. This returns the inspection mission to the responsible agency and eliminates contractor self-inspection and quality control. [Pg.38]

The Supplement B (reference) contains a description of the process to render an automatic construction of mathematical models with the application of electronic computer. The research work of the Institute of the applied mathematics of The Academy of Sciences ( Ukraine) was assumed as a basis for the Supplement. The prepared mathematical model provides the possibility to spare strength and to save money, usually spent for the development of the mathematical models of each separate enterprise. The model provides the possibility to execute the works standard forms and records for the non-destructive inspection in complete correspondence with the requirements of the Standard. [Pg.26]

CBR systems require that the operator is present during data interpretation. The operator has to provide the correct classification for the data that could not be interpreted by the system. This means that completely automatic CBR system is not feasible, but in case of the NDT inspection operator is almost always present. [Pg.101]

Our experiences with the software developed within the ANDES project have shown that CBR is a helpful methodology for use in the interpretation of NDT data from field inspections. Because CBR systems can adapt to new situations they can cope with inspection of varying constructions in varying conditions. However, because CBR systems learn from classifications made by the operator this means that they will not be very useful for completely automatic interpretation. Fortunately, most of the NDT inspection requires the presence of an operator because of the required high reliability. [Pg.103]

In service inspections of French nuclear Pressure Water Reactor (PWR) vessels are carried out automatically in complete immersion from the inside by means of ultrasonic focused probes working in the pulse echo mode. Concern has been expressed about the capabilities of performing non destructive evaluation of the Outer Surface Defects (OSD), i.e. defects located in the vicinity of the outer surface of the inspected components. OSD are insonified by both a "direct" field that passes through the inner surface (water/steel) of the component containing the defect and a "secondary" field reflected from the outer surface. Consequently, the Bscan images, containing the signatures of such defects, are complicated and their interpretation is a difficult task. [Pg.171]

Objects which are not covered completely by the fan-beam, which is defined by the linear detector array and the source can be inspected in a special mode. In this case the usable width of the fan is doubled, by placing the turning centre of the object onto the two edges oft the fan. [Pg.586]

The tests concluded that it was possible to use real time X-ray to inspect incoming frozen fish blocks 100% and giving a completely accurate assessment of the quality of the blocks to enable the factory to calculate the correct purchase price as a function of the bone content. [Pg.589]

Once the feasibility of using real time X-ray as an inspection method was established, it was decided to proceed with the design of a system equally suited for control of incoming frozen fish blocks and for developing inspection procedures. These inspection procedures are, when completed, to be the basis of the inspection standards for the complete concern. [Pg.589]

The nominal visibility level VL om was determined from the viewing conditions of indications as decribed in 2.2 (Fig. 1). Assuming that this VL o , is equivalent to the VL with nominal inspection parameters, for the worst case of any inspection parameter the relative reduction R of the visibility of the indications was determined and summarized to the overall visibility level VLmin. Naturally the following data may be varied and/or completed. [Pg.674]

Secondly, a short pulse duration is required in order to achieve a good axial resolution, i.e. two signals close together should be detected without interference. The task can be, for example, to detect a small reflector close to the surface or back wall of the test object, as the inspection has to cover the total volume as complete as possible, including the near-surface regions. [Pg.708]

In order that the data acquisition system can obtain information about the spatial location and orientation of the probe, a four-channel incremental encoder interface board is installed. Three channels are used to define position in three-dimensional space, while the fourth monitors the skew of the probe (skew is defined as rotation about an axis normal to the probe face). Although six measurements are required to completely define the location and orientation, it is assumed that the probe remains in contact with the inspection surface. [Pg.768]

The complete advanced 3D inspection system contains three main components the Advanced Inspection Robot - AIR-1, the new generation P-scan ultrasonic data acquisition system - PS-4 and the 3D ultrasonic simulation system - UltraSIM. [Pg.870]

In co-operation with LM Glasfiber, a complete section of a rotor blade was produced with a number of well defined defects in order to perform an initial sensitivity test by means of ultrasound, vibrations techniques and real-time radiography. Based on the results of this initial test it was found that automated ultrasonic inspection was the best suited teclmique. In co-... [Pg.980]

When the scanning of the adhesive bonded joint between the shells on the leading edge is complete, the rotor blade is rotated 180° and another special designed Y-module is applied for inspection of the trailing edge of the rotor blade in set-up 3, illustrated on figure 5. [Pg.982]

The coin-tap test is a widely used teclinique on thin filament winded beams for detection of disbonded and delaminated areas. However, since the sensitivity of this teclinique depends not only on the operator but also on the thickness of the inspected component, the coin-tap testing technique is most sensitive to defects positioned near the surface of the laminate. Therefore, it was decided to constructed a new scaimer for automated ultrasonic inspection of filament winded beams. A complete test rig illustrated in figure 6 was constructed in order to reduce the scanning time. While the beam rotates the probe is moved from one end to the other of the beam. When the scarming is complete it is saved on diskette and can then be evaluated on a PC. The scanner is controlled by the P-scan system, which enables the results to be presented in three dimensions (Top, Side and End view). [Pg.983]

Critical to the successtlil completion of this process are the software tools required to store and analyse the inspection and related data. This is a major task and to achieve this OIS has produced, in conjunction with a major specialist technical software provider, the Asset Condition Evaluation Tool (Acet). Acet is a comprehensive suite of programs which draws on the extensive experience of engineers working in this field for many years, to provide a readily usable and highly auditable package for this application. [Pg.1013]

The results of corrosion surveys are received by the Surveyor in an agreed format using Forms TMl - TM8, preferably with the LR software freely issued to the approved firms. The report will highlight any areas where corrosion has gone beyond the permitted maximum diminution, which may be as low as 15% of the nominal thickness for a single item, and will also identify areas of "substantial corrosion T.e., any in excess of 75% of the permitted maximum. Corrosion in excess of that permitted means that the item has to be replaced. Any areas of corrosion deemed to be "substantial" are recorded for annual inspection. The Surveyor will review the completed report for verification and confirmation of the completeness of the thickness survey. [Pg.1051]
