A flush strip element is available for use in pipelines and obviates the necessity for withdrawal of probes prior to use of inspection vehicles. This element design more closely represents the inner wall of a pipe or pipeline.

To determine if it is effective, the FMCSA will monitor the company s roadside inspections conducted by trained oflScers. If the company is receiving too many vehicle violations dm-ing roadside inspections, the company may be subjected to an audit. During the audit, the investigator will review the company s maintenance records, and will ask to inspect vehicles that the company has on-site that are considered as being in service. If the maintenance records are found to be inadequate, the company is not adhering to the maintenance schedules that have been established, or the vehicles are not in adequate condition, the company may be fined.

Is there a designated staff person responsible for transportation program, vehicle safety, and driver selection administration Responsibihties would include but not be limited to keeping vehicle maintenance records, keeping records of annual vehicle safety inspections (vehicles must be inspected by a certified mechanic), and performing driver training.

Vehicle inspections must be conducted during the on-site visit if none of the three cases described above apply. Auditors will inspect vehicles that were operated in interstate commerce within the previous 7 days and are ready for dispatch and available for inspection. Auditors t3rpi-cally inspect those vehicles involved in accidents first. There are two principle types of inspection vehicle used to survey the internal and/or external condition of steel transmission pipelines. The first involves the direct measurement of wall thickness by ultrasonics. The second uses an induced magnetic flux in the pipe wall to assess the defect size from the perturbation caused by defects. Both techniques require the pipe internals to be thoronghly cleaned and free of deposits for them to function successfiiUy.
