This chapter will discuss the testing, analysis, and design of structural adhesive joints. Adhesive bond test techniques to be considered include tensile, shear, peel, impact, creep, and fatigue. Some considerations will also be given to the effect of environment and test rate. A continuum approach to the analysis of adhesive joints will discuss tensile, shear, and peel stresses which arise in various joint geometries. Classical theories by Volkersen, Goland and Reissner, and others will be included. References to finite element analysis will be made where appropriate throughout the chapter. 

As for bonded joints, adhesively bonded joints are also more susceptible to environmental condition and fatigue loading in comparison to their metallic counterparts, also governed by the lay-up of the FRPC adherends. The aforementioned issnes, coupled with the paucity of relevant engineering data, make the design of adhesively bonded joints of pipes more critical. 

Unlike mechanical joints, adhesive bonds do not immediately reach their maximum or ultimate strength because adhesives are reactive systems which need time to cure for achieving handling strength and load-bearing strength (Fig. 63).
