Burnback Resistance The ability of a flame arrester to maintain its mechanical integrity and prevent flame breakthrough when the flame arrester is subjected to a standing flame. See also Endurance Burn(ing). [Pg.197]

In addition to dynamic vulcanization, the technological compatibilization technique was also adopted by Coran and Patel [34] to obtain thermoplastic vulcanizate having good mechanical integrity and elastic recovery. [Pg.642]

Table II shows data obtained by sequential hexanes and ethanol extractions of the desilylated networks. Attempts to extract the networks prior to desilylation failed because the samples swelled to such a great degree that they lost their mechanical integrity and disintegrated. The amount of hexanes extractable material is less than 3% in all cases which indicates high copolymerization yields. Ethanol extractables were not determined because the presence of the byproducts of the desilylation, which are in the ethanol, would have given artificially high readings. In Nafion, the hydrophobic perfluorinated segments of the polymer are incompatible with the hydrophilic sulfonic acid groups and thus phase separation occurs. When exposed to water, the hydrophilic domains swell to provide channels for proton transport, whereas the hydrophobic domains provide mechanical integrity and, at least in the case of lower lEC samples. [Pg.114]

Transfer handling conditions can affect mechanical integrity and lead to premature catastrophic hose failure. These potentially damaging conditions include the following ... [Pg.318]

Tracer formulation is basically a mixture of an oxidizer and a metal fuel together with other additives, included to modify the burning rate, color, radiant output, mechanical integrity and sensitivity. Since tracer formulations are relatively difficult to ignite, a more readily ignitable formulation is pressed on the top of the tracer formulation. [Pg.346]

Vented sintered plate cells are more expensive to produce than pocket plate cells and are therefore restricted mainly to applications where their mechanical integrity and resistance to shock and acceleration together with their high power density are of importance, e.g. in aircraft, helicopters, military vehicles, city buses, etc. Twenty-four volt batteries are generally used, with capacities in the range 30-60 Ah. [Pg.175]

Of course, it is common (and often desireable) to have both amorphous and crystalline phases present in a freeze-dried formulation. This is particularly relevant to freeze-dried proteins, where the lyoprotectant is present in the amorphous state, and another component, such as glycine or mannitol, is present as a crystalline solid in order to impart mechanical integrity and pharmaceutical elegance to the lyophilized solid. [Pg.271]

Water and steam are nearly always present in most chemical processes. Their physical properties are generally well understood. Process perils are sometimes related to the infamous deeds of water and steam. The thrust of OSHAs Process Safety Management Law of 1992 focused on the processes that handled a list of 140 highly hazardous chemicals as well as processes that contained an over 10,000 pounds (4,540 kg) of flammable liquids or gases. Even after those chemicals are handled with higher levels of mechanical integrity and additional scrutiny, we will still need to keep our eye on water and its sometimes evil twin, steam. [Pg.57]

Offers an industry view of mechanical integrity and details on inspections and tests... [Pg.199]

Most of the experimental research concerning CMRs has been made at the laboratory scale, with experiments of short duration. Little is known about the effect of long term operation on the stability of membranes in CMRs thermal resistance in the reactive media, mechanical integrity, and fouling by carbon deposits or side reactions are all parameters which require improved knowledge to assess the industrial future of CMRs. [Pg.421]

Methods that approximate quantum-mechanical integrals and/or incorporate experimental data to simplify computation and improve agreement with experiment... [Pg.455]

The primary functions of a good catalyst support are to (1) maximize catalyst utilization, (2) transport electrons, and (3) transfer heat. Other desirable attributes include high chemical and electrochemical stability, good mechanical integrity, and, last but not least, low cost. Carbon materials, such as Vulcan-X72 by Cabot Corp., are widely... [Pg.267]
