Electronic mail system

Many companies have adopted Total Quality Management as a way to promote continuous improvement in a broad range of business applications. TQM considers all business activities as processes, each one of which involves specific customer-supplier relationships. These relationships may be entirely internal, defined in terms of the process under study. For example, delivering efficient electronic mail service is a "process" in TQM terms. The "customers" for your company s electronic mail system are the employees who use it the "supplier" may office services, MIS, or other support personnel. 

Within Wide-Area Networks (WAN) computers are connected over long distances via public telecommunication lines provided by national PITs. WANs are especially useful to access host computers with large databases, e.g. for the retrieval of bibliographic information. Another use of WANs are internationally operated electronic mail systems.

The selection of compatible electronic mail systems by stakeholders could require significant effort to include gateway functions for validation of credentials and transformation of messages among the disparate email systems. Gateway functions are literally the systems that allow the email in and out, and in theory at least let it in or out with censorship of email parts. The primary function of the gateway is to assess message validity. 

Most large companies are developing office automation systems, as an adjunct to their word processing capability, using local area networks for electronic mail. If they have a need for chemical structure handling within those facilities, in other words if they have chemical documents or reports which they want to send through an electronic mail system, the standard facility should be used and the chemical application software should fit within the standard facility. 

Training employees solely by means of a film or video without the opportunity for a discussion period would constitute a violation of 29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2). Never consider a computer program, even an interactive one, as appropriate unless the employer suppl ents such training with site-specific information required. Provide trainees with direct access to a qualified trainer during all training sessions. OSHA permits anployers to meet the requirement if personnel can directly access a trainer by way of a telephone hotline. OSHA does not consider the use of electronic mail systems to answer employee questions unless a trainer answers e-mailed questions at the time the questions arise. 

Our plan was to create a prototype LAN system and demonstrate it in a public school using an earth science curriculum. A year-long formative experiment was completed in June, 1987. A LAN connected the 25 Apple lie computers in the school to a hard drive which allowed for central storage of data, text, and programs. The Bank Street Writer word processing program was enhanced with an electronic mail system. The Bank Street Filer was another basic tool which made it possible for students to create databases which could be accessed from any computer in the school [12].

A key element of successful health and safety management is the ability of the organisation to learn from its experiences. Arrangements should be made so that proactive data (e.g. from audit results) and reactive data (e.g. from incidents) in one area of an organisation are shared with other areas in the organisation. In this way, areas have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of others and to consider whether they have similar deficiencies in their systems and processes. Modes of indirect communication may involve safety and health suggestion boxes and electronic mail systems. Unrestricted and functional communication systems can therefore significantly contribnte to the promotion of greater anployee input, feedback, and education about worksite mechanisms, policies and procedures, and employee safety and health protection by incorporating a flow of information aimed at correcting hazards and identifying the concerns of everyone. 

OSHA has said that the requirement for interactive questions and answers has been interpreted to mean that employees must have direct access to a qualified trainer dming the training session. The use of an electronic mail system to answer employee questions would not be considered direct access to a qualified trainer, unless the trainer is available to answer e-mailed questions at the time the questions arise. Frequently, a student may be rmable to go further with the training or to understand related training content until a response is received. The book does not attempt to address the issue of standards for electronic publishing. However, the reader may be interested to know the electronic methodology used in producing the book. All but two of the chapters were submitted to me on floppy disks. The remaining two were downloaded from the Chemical Abstracts Service electronic mail system. Only one floppy disk could not be converted to ASCII and reprocessed. That chapter had to be word processed from scratch by my secretary. All the other chapters were sent electronically to her using the DEC All-in-1 office automation system in use at ICI. The earliest chapters unfortunately required careful checking because the terminal emulation software used did not have an error checking protocol and occasional clauses were... 

The importation of data from one electronic data system to another is improving. Some systems import weather data and sample chains of custody, such as shipping conditions, sample handling, etc., into the field raw data package. This allows for simplified reporting and tabulation. Data transmission over the Internet is improving and is already far superior to regular mail and even next-day delivery services. 

Electronic mail is another way to obtain information from a specialist. This user-friendly system allows immediate communication and transmission of documents in many forms. 

The three basic Internet applications ol remote login, electronic mail, and Hie transfer are building blocks of more sophisticated applications that offer increased functionality and ease of network use. Tools such as Gopher, Wide Area Information Servers (WAIS). and World Wide Web (WWW) go beyond the three basic Internet functions to make information on the network easier to locale and use. Detailed descriptions of these tools are available. This trend toward more powerful, user-friendly networked information resource access systems should continue as Internet grows and matures. 

E-mail messages should not be used to authorize GxP activities or approve GxP documentation unless the e-mail system is validated and individual e-mails comply with electronic record requirements. 

This section should describe the application layer services snpported by the WAN. It shall describe the follows services, e.g.. Electronic Messaging Systems, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), etc.
