Program computer

Computer is a machine designed to determine the answer to a specific mathematical problem [Pg.176]

The term usually excludes its predecessors abacus (which dates from 6Q0BC [Pg.176]

Computers are subdivided into digital and analog branches  [Pg.176]

Digital computers use either a decimal or binary system of notations (Ref 3, p 78). The binary system is a number system which uses two symbols (usually denoted by 0 and 1 ) and has two as its base, just as the decimal system uses ten symbols (0, 1, 2,. .. 9) and the base ten (Ref 3, p38). Digital computers are also called discrete , because they recognize only discrete values, 0, 1, 2 etc (Ref 1, p 45) [Pg.176]

Analog computers can be subdivided into function computers and integrating computers . Their development will be briefly described here under History of Computers  [Pg.177]

Some more recent software uses the tensor LEED approximation of Rous and Pen-dry which can save a substantial amount of computer time [2.268-2.270]. In tensor LEED the amplitudes (0) of all escaping electron waves (spots) are first calculated conventionally as described above for a certain reference geometry. Then the derivatives of these amplitudes 5Ag/5ri with respect to small displacements of each atom i in this reference geometry are calculated. These derivatives are the constituents of the tensor . VPLQFT is a computer program for correlating binary vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data at low to moderate pressures.
