Walter Kanfmarm also reported the determination of the charge-to-mass ratio of cathode rays (abont 10 emu g- ) in a paper he submitted in April 1897 (7). Kanfmarm also based his result on magnetic deflection measurements however, he concluded that the hypothesis of cathode rays as emitted particles could not explain his data. (One of the outstanding questions in the study of cathode rays in the late 1890s was whether they were particles or electromagnetic waves. Thomson and Kanfmarm were typical of their coimtrymen most British researchers leaned toward the particulate hypothesis and most Germans toward waves.) Today Kanfmarm is better known for his careful measurements of the velocity-dependent mass of the electron published over several years beginning in 1901 these results were later explained by special relativity.

Electronic regulatory submissions combine components from specific systems, e.g., computer-aided review tools and electronic document management systems. Electronic publishing systems assemble electronic documents and images into electronic dossiers. The validation requirements of the publishing system, over and above the requirements for each component system should be assessed. 

Recent advances in electronic publishing mean that fuU-text copies of research articles can be downloaded either from a publisher or via BIDS. In the case of the former you will need to estabhsh whether your institute has an electronic subscription to the publication of interest. Viewing of an electronic research paper is done via a particular software programme, e.g. the reader Adobe Acrobat . It is often possible to download a free copy of the reader to your computer the first time you try this.

Electronic publishing is relatively new and is not yet in any standardized form. It is important to understand, however, the main classes of electronic publication, before taking the big step of committing your clinical trial report to it. Only then can the central question be answered for that clinical trial Would electronic publication make these data more easily available to the audience that can best use them (Geddes, 1999) ...

In terms of electronic publishing, the NLM launched PubMed Central this year in an effort to reduce the time from article submission to publication and to increase the dissemination of new information in the life sciences. PubMed Central eventually will contain two types of data depositories The first will be peer-reviewed content from journals that will partner with NLM to make their content available free to the public and the second depository will contain articles submitted directly by authors. Ideally, PubMed Central would increase the options for researchers and academicians to publish their research. This is a very new concept in medical publishing and it will be exciting to watch how it takes shape in terms of the quality of research articles submitted and the way in which the healthcare community embraces this new source of information.
