Electronic mail

Most people are introduced to the Internet through the use of electronic mail or E-mail. The use of E-mail has become practically indispensable in many settings because of its convenience as a medium for sending, receiving, and replying to [Pg.7]

E-mail programs vary widely, depending on both the platform and the needs of the users. Most often, the characteristics of the local area network (LAN) dictate what types of mail programs can be used, and the decision is often left to systems [Pg.7]

Bulk E-Mail. As with postal mail, there has been an upsurge in spam or junk E-mail, where companies compile bulk lists of E-mail addresses for use in commercial promotions. Because most of these lists are compiled from online registration forms and similar sources, the best defense for remaining off these bulk E-mail lists is to be selective as to whom E-mail addresses are provided. Most newsgroups keep their mailing lists confidential if in doubt and if this is a concern, one should ask. [Pg.8]

In the first edition of this book I wrote, A major use of the Internet is for electronic mail, but extremely rapid growth is being observed in other areas, particularly the "World-Wide Web" (WWW).... Such a phrase seems an understatement despite the hype, the Internet has certainly made a dramatic impact, not least on the scientific community, where its... [Pg.29]

Many databases can be classified in multiple ways because of multiple type data, eg, text and numeric data, text and image data, image and audio data, etc. Also included in the data presented in Table 1 are two additional classes of databases, electronic services and software. Both of these data types could also be classed by form of representation because of use of words and numbers. However, the way in which these databases are used is different and they have special characteristics. Thus they are presented as additional classes. Whereas electronic information services such as bulletin boards, electronic mail, and electronic conferencing contain data that are transitory and nonarchival, these must be included among databases because several of the principal vendors seU these services in the same way as database search services are sold. [Pg.455]

Electronic mail and electronic conferencing services are not counted as separate databases, but when such electronic services are included with a database they are counted as aspects of the associated database and the database is classified accordingly. Several commercial online services make software databases available online, eg, the Microsoft Programmers Library, MacTutor, and Atari RoundTable. Several producers offer CD-ROM databases containing software. Such software databases contain the coding and documentation for software packages and so are classified as software databases. These are different from directories of software that are classed as directory databases. [Pg.455]

As PSM champion you have considerable influence in determining how the PSM team can most effectively exchange information. At the same time, iTs almost always true that people function best with familiar methods and techniques. For example, people who are unaccustomed to electronic mail or teleconferencing are unlikely (at least in the short term) to use these vehicles effectively. [Pg.70]

Many companies have adopted Total Quality Management as a way to promote continuous improvement in a broad range of business applications. TQM considers all business activities as processes, each one of which involves specific customer-supplier relationships. These relationships may be entirely internal, defined in terms of the process under study. For example, delivering efficient electronic mail service is a "process" in TQM terms. The "customers" for your company s electronic mail system are the employees who use it the "supplier" may office services, MIS, or other support personnel. [Pg.130]

TQM calls on project teams to analyze business processes in terms of customer satisfaction, and begins with an understanding of who the customers are and who is responsible for meeting their expectations. In relatively simple processes (such as the electronic mail example), the customer-supplier relationship is fairly clearcut. In more complex processes that affect many people in different ways, there may be multiple customer and supplier categories, each requiring its own analysis. TQM untangles these processes by identifying the subprocesses, activities, and customer-supplier relationships they comprise. [Pg.130]

Reports should be kept brief and as easy as possible for users to submit. This will minimize the chance that the need to prepare reports ends up robbing significant resources from the PSM implementation itself. For example, if your company routinely uses electronic mail for communication, it can be helpful to accept reports in that way. [Pg.178]

This expanded view of task automation includes new capabilities in the the traditional area of instrument automation and in the somewhat newer related field of robotics. In addition it includes a number of functions which are not new to the office and business environment but have only recently become readily available in the laboratory. These are tools such as data base management, scientific text processing, and electronic mail and document transfer. One way to improve technical productivity Is by giving the scientist more time to do science. This can be accomplished through improved efficiency In the office, communication, and information retrieval functions which must be performed as well as by allowing science to be done In new and more efficient ways through the use of computers. [Pg.2]

Use of electronic mail (e-mail) has been widespread for more than a decade. E-mail simplifies the flow of ideas, connects people from distant offices, eliminates the need for meetings, and often boosts productivity. However, e-mail should be carefully managed to avoid unclear and inappropriate communication. E-mail messages should be concise and limited to one topic. When complex issues need to be addressed, phone calls are still best. [Pg.74]

A pen register is a mechanical device that records the numbers dialed on a telephone by monitoring the electrical impulses caused when the dial on the telephone is released. It does not overhear oral communications and does not indicate whether calls are actually completed. They can be used to record the telephone number dialed by the subject of the surveillance. Trap and trace devices, are used to record the telephone numbers of incoming calls received by the subject [114]. They are also used to capture source and address information for computer conversations (electronic mail) [115]. [Pg.263]

The three basic Internet applications ol remote login, electronic mail, and Hie transfer are building blocks of more sophisticated applications that offer increased functionality and ease of network use. Tools such as Gopher, Wide Area Information Servers (WAIS). and World Wide Web (WWW) go beyond the three basic Internet functions to make information on the network easier to locale and use. Detailed descriptions of these tools are available. This trend toward more powerful, user-friendly networked information resource access systems should continue as Internet grows and matures. [Pg.831]
