Bulk E-Mail. As with postal mail, there has been an upsurge in spam or junk E-mail, where companies compile bulk lists of E-mail addresses for use in commercial promotions. Because most of these lists are compiled from online registration forms and similar sources, the best defense for remaining off these bulk E-mail lists is to be selective as to whom E-mail addresses are provided. Most newsgroups keep their mailing lists confidential if in doubt and if this is a concern, one should ask.

Many databases can be classified in multiple ways because of multiple type data, eg, text and numeric data, text and image data, image and audio data, etc. Also included in the data presented in Table 1 are two additional classes of databases, electronic services and software. Both of these data types could also be classed by form of representation because of use of words and numbers. However, the way in which these databases are used is different and they have special characteristics. Thus they are presented as additional classes. Whereas electronic information services such as bulletin boards, electronic mail, and electronic conferencing contain data that are transitory and nonarchival, these must be included among databases because several of the principal vendors seU these services in the same way as database search services are sold.

As PSM champion you have considerable influence in determining how the PSM team can most effectively exchange information. At the same time, iTs almost always true that people function best with familiar methods and techniques. Many companies have adopted Total Quality Management as a way to promote continuous improvement in a broad range of business applications. TQM considers all business activities as processes, each one of which involves specific customer-supplier relationships. These relationships may be entirely internal, defined in terms of the process under study. For example, delivering efficient electronic mail service is a "process" in TQM terms. The "customers" for your company s electronic mail system are the employees who use it the "supplier" may office services, MIS, or other support personnel. 

TQM calls on project teams to analyze business processes in terms of customer satisfaction, and begins with an understanding of who the customers are and who is responsible for meeting their expectations. In relatively simple processes (such as the electronic mail example), the customer-supplier relationship is fairly clearcut. In more complex processes that affect many people in different ways, there may be multiple customer and supplier categories, each requiring its own analysis. TQM untangles these processes by identifying the subprocesses, activities, and customer-supplier relationships they comprise. 

Reports should be kept brief and as easy as possible for users to submit. This will minimize the chance that the need to prepare reports ends up robbing significant resources from the PSM implementation itself. For example, if your company routinely uses electronic mail for communication, it can be helpful to accept reports in that way.

A pen register is a mechanical device that records the numbers dialed on a telephone by monitoring the electrical impulses caused when the dial on the telephone is released. Tools such as Gopher, Wide Area Information Servers (WAIS). and World Wide Web (WWW) go beyond the three basic Internet functions to make information on the network easier to locale and use.
