E-business applications

These few examples already demonstrate that enterprise models play a major role in the success of e-business. Some software vendors, such as SAP and Oracle, have understood this development and are already implementing their first model-based e-business applications.

This case study was embedded as part of a research setting wherein the impact of two collaboration tools/e-business applications— namely extranet and B2B—in an automotive SCM strategic business unit was examined. The sample of the SCM consisted of an independently owned local company which operated as a supplier but was restricted in its operations to the southern part of Germany. This collaboration was studied retrospectively as the collaboration took place between the SCM and its 12 national suppliers.

As Table 7.1 indicates there are some tools and techniques that are in common use across the operations and production and strategy and marketing and sales functions. The tools and techniques that tend to be used most commonly were clearly those related to performance measurement and IT and Internet business activities. Thus, KPls, E-Business applications, the balanced scorecard, benchmarking and activity based costing are all in use across the three functions. It is clear, however, that the operations and production function has a very high number of tools and techniques that it uses uniquely for its own purposes. This function-specificity is something that recurs when one considers the procurement and supply function.

Signature The form must be signed and dated. Ordinarily only one person should sign the form, i.e., the applicant, or the applicant s attorney, agent, or other authorized official. When this project organization has been set up, chemical companies have to ensure that a consistent corporate IT platform is developed which can then be leveraged. This is particularly critical for e-businesses close to the core business, in order to capitalize on the synergies between existing business units. Here, the corporate IT department should serve as an internal e-commerce application service provider, although the development and hosting of the e-commerce solutions may be partly outsourced to a third party provider. Examples of such corporate IT platforms are solutions such as MyAccount Dow, My Account solution at BASF, etc. E-com-merce businesses that are not related to the core business of the chemical company can be set up as an independent company with no constraints on the IT side.

Security services will be provided for applications to apply appropriate business rules for access control of records based on the identity, roles, and purposes (i.e., business functions), in addition to distributed security services for authentication, authorization, confidentiality, integrity and nonrepudiation, to protect the best interests of stakeholders. Later in this book we will discuss the notion of a stakeholder in healthcare. It suffices here to say that these are the people legitimately involved in healthcare such as the patient, physician, and emergency medical staff. In some definitions stakeholders are the only people who can access the patient record. There are usually a special provisionings for the emergency care staff to access the patient data without an explicit informed consent in the event that the patient is unconscious. 

A distinction should immediately be made between information technology and information systems. The IT infrastrurture comprises the cables, hubs, switches and servers on which the systems run. It is also necessary to add to this the basic set of desktop tools, e.g., Miaosoft Office Professional . There can be cases where the business application drives major step changes in infrastructure direction. These instances, almost by definition, will be very large, strategic, high risk and infrequent opportunities. 

Because of its huge growth potential, the CRM market is very dynamic, with a stream of new entrants and the expansion of current CRM vendors tools. With respect to ERP packages, the trend is toward the eventual blending of ERP with CRM modules. This will occur as the major ERP vendors continue to turn their focus toward e-business. It is expected that this new amalgam of front-office with back-office applications will lead to a seamless new set of IS development tools called e-business suites (Goldbaum 1999). 

The most intensive development is foreseeable in the commercial and business applications (e-commerce, e-business).

In addition to ERP (core) systems, a wide variety of business application systems (ERP modules) exist that provide interfaces to these ERP systems. In this context, different variations could be noticed in the development of ERP systems in recent years. While some ERP vendors tend to integrate an extensive range of functionality into their own systems, others follow the best-of-breed approach. While EDI was introdueed some time ago by large firms, its eost made it difficult for even medium-sized firms. Intemetteehnology, with its open system platform and lower cost, is proving to be of signifieant benefit for many SME SCM applications. Successful adoption and integration of basic e-commerce, with its extensive use of the Internet, can serve as a foundation to more sophisticated solutions, such as e-SCM. Some of the SME research has focused on the broader area of e-business, including SCM applications (butnot always explicitly stating so), while other research has focused specifically on SCM applications.
