Abstract. Quality management is already a successful concept for industrial companies. The article shows where and how a systematic quality management can be used to improve the performance of institutes and chairs in education and research. Therefore in a first step the customers, products and processes of institutes and chairs are analyzed to define areas where systematic quality management can help.
