The same concepts of a network as the local area network (LAN) ia an office can be extended over a broader area, eg, wide area network (WAN), effectively to extend the network around the world. This type of network is becoming more important as prepress operations try to work more... 

The second type is the WAN (wide area network) installation. In this setup the LIMS take advantage of telecommunication technology to cover a great distance. The setup can also be used to connect disparate LANs together. In this configuration, the LIMS are installed on both the clients and a central server. The third type is the so-called centrally hosted thin client installation . For this setup, system administration is managed at a corporate center, where the LIMS are hosted and distributed via a WAN or the Internet with a virtual private network (VPN). The last and also the newest type is the ASP (Application Service Provision provider)-hosted installation. In this setup, the LIMS are hosted on a centrally managed server form and maintained by third-party specialists. Users access the LIMS with any Internet-connected PC with a standard Web browser. 

But it is only one of hundreds of kinds of data that are transferred by HTTP on WANs (Wide Area Networks, LANs (Local Area Networks) and internal networks. HTTP offered an appropriate level of technology at the right time and its use has grown exponentially over the past decade. Virtually every computer in the world today contains an HTTP interpreter and generator (as do many dedicated devices which do not look like computers).

A complicating factor in the validation of LIMS is the wide variety in the scale of LIMS implementations. A LIMS can vary from a PC-based application in a single laboratory to a client/server-based system running across multiple sites on a company-wide area network with shared access to servers and multiple interfaces to other business systems.

The key to the rapid development of the Internet was the evolution and expansion of networks - collections of computers which can communicate with each other.
