Data transmission

Searching for chemical structures requires a specific graphical component of the software, as a Tektronix emulation is necessary. In contrast to the majority of graphic programs which are based on vector graphics, chemical structures are recorded as a dot matrix. 

The PC must have a serial port - RS232-C or V.24 - which is connected to a modem to transmit data through the public telephone network. Digital bits are converted by the modem to analog signals and reverse. The public telephone net is used up to the next node - PAD of a public data transmission net. There, the data are bundled into packages and addressed. In addition to this there are further possibilities for transmitting data

Data transmission rate per foot is a function of both pulse frequency and rate of penetration. Sensors acquire and transmit data samples at fixed time intervals and therefore the sampling per foot is a function of rate of penetration. Current tools allow a real time sampling and transmission rate similar to wireline tools as long as the penetration rate does not exceed about 100 ft/h. If drilling progresses faster or if there are significant variations in penetration rate, resampling by depth as opposed to time intervals may be required.

A problem with the early MWD mud pulse systems was the very slow rate of data transmission. Several minutes were needed to transmit one set of directional data. Anadrill working with a Mobil patent [100] developed in the early 1980s a continuous wave system with a much faster data rate. It became possible to transmit many more drilling data, and also to transmit logging data making LWD possible. Today, as many as 16 parameters can be transmitted in 16 s. The dream of the early pioneers has been more than fulfilled since azimuth, inclination, tool face, downhole weight-on-bit, downhole torque, shocks, caliper, resistivity, gamma ray, neutron, density, Pe, sonic and more can be transmitted in realtime to the rig floor and the main office.

The manufacturers database, Campus, provides use that is free of charge and no charges for data transmission. The importation of data from one electronic data system to another is improving. Some systems import weather data and sample chains of custody, such as shipping conditions, sample handling, etc., into the field raw data package. This allows for simplified reporting and tabulation. Data transmission over the Internet is improving and is already far superior to regular mail and even next-day delivery services. 

Each of these sectors use their own specific products and favorite bus systems. Diversity in data transmission rates and different power requirements makes it unlikely that one standard bus system will develop. Products with interfaces for different bus-systems are also available, but production costs are too high for small companies. The fundamental elements of deterministic models involve a combination of chemical and meteorologic input, preprocessing with data transmission, logic that describes atmospheric processes, and concentration-field output tables or displays.
