Calcium sodium lactate, Ca(C3H503)2,2NaC3H503,4H20, Mol. Wt. 514 4, is standardised in the B.P.C. on its calcium and sodium contents. The calcium is determined as under calcium lactate above, 1 ml 0 1 N = 0 002004 g Ca. For sodium, the ash from about 2 g is boiled with 50 ml of 0 5N hydrochloric acid, filtered, washed and back-titrated with 0-5N sodium hydroxide to methyl orange a correction is made for the amount of 0 5N acid equivalent to the volume of 0 1 N permanganate required by calcium in the weight of sample taken. 1 ml 0-5N = 0 0115 g Na. [Pg.368]

The purified lactic acid can be neutralized by various alkalis to produce lactic salt solutions such as sodium lactate and calcium lactate. Solid forms of lactic salts can be produced after evaporation, spray-drying, crystallization, and granulation. The other bottleneck for lactic acid production is the operating cost. For example, sterilization is necessary for fermentative production. This will help to reduce energy consumption and lower labor costs. Moreover, because of the inhibitory effects of a low pH on cell growth and lactic acid production, CaCOs must be added to maintain a constant pH as a consequence, the regeneration of precipitated calcium lactate is observed (Datta and Henry, 2006). To solve this problem, a sodium lactate-tolerant strain. Bacillus sp. Na-2, was obtained by ion-beam implantation and applied during an L-lactic acid production process (Qin et al., 2010). On the other hand, new processes can be applied to prevent the production of calcium lactate, for example, reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, electrodialysis, and solvent extraction (Datta and Henry, 2006). [Pg.268]
