Phthalate esters orphthalates are molecules predominantly used in commerce to make plastic flexible. The substances produced in highest quantity, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP or DOP), di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) and di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) are used almost exclusively as plasticisers in flexible PVC. Recently, these phthalates have been the focus of regulatory attention around the... [Pg.28]

The proportioning pump controls the rate of advancement, viz 10 inch/minute, of each sample through the analysis stream. Hence, a fixed length of tubing is equivalent to a fixed amount of time. Each analysis stream is made of transparent plastic flexible tubing, and each patient-sample is separated from one another by an air-bubble. [Pg.67]

PVC is the most commonly calendered plastic, especially in plasticized flexible form. Other materials commonly calendered are rubber, ABS, polyurethane, and thermoplastic elastomers. [Pg.681]

Dibutyl phthalate has multiple uses in a variety of materials. Primary uses for dibutyl phthalate are to soften and increase plastic flexibility, for example, in shower curtains, raincoats, food wraps, and car interiors to name a few. It has been used in insect repellents and as a solvent for perfume oil and resins. Dibutyl phthalate can be used as a plasticizer in nitrocellulose lacquers, elastomers, explosives, nail polish, and solid rocket propellants. Other uses include perfume fixative, textile lubricating agent, safety glass additive, printing inks, and adhesives. [Pg.812]

Plasticizers are one of the most important classes of additives. These are the additives that give the plastics flexibility and durability. Most of these additives are used in PVC, which is in turn used in a wide variety of compounds ranging from plumbing and construction materials to plastic bottles. Unfortunately, since the additives are not reacted into the polymer, they can migrate to the surface of the finished plastic product and then evaporate or leach into the surrounding environment. This disadvantage for use is an advantage for analysis, because these plasticizers are easily desorbed from the base polymer. [Pg.185]

Bonding of rigid, weakly deformable materials with plastic, flexible materials, for example, metal-rubber In this case, choose adhesives that develop flexible, deformable adhesive layers, for example, low crosslinked polyurethanes, contact adhesives. [Pg.103]

When asked how it s possible for patients with half a brain to live and have a life, the standard answer is plasticity, flexibility, redundancy, and potential of the human brain. But in reality, neurosurgeons don t know how it s possible. They just know that individuals can have half of their brains removed by surgery and be nurtured back into a useful functioning life. That s a fact that needs to be accounted for by any theory of how the mind works. [Pg.69]

Advantages of OLEDs over inorganic LEDs are their potential lower cost, ability to be incorporated into flexible products and ability to be deposited in various sizes and shapes on a variety of substrates including glass and thin plastic flexible sheets. They are also produced in ultrathin layers where a multilayer structure of active emitting material may be only 100 to 200 nm thick. [Pg.274]
