If any rinsing solution that is isotonic to blood such as 0.9% NaCl or RINGER lactate is applied, the result of cellular damage will be different. The cells blow up but keep their integrity. 

Tissue culture incubated with RINGER lactate of 290 mOsmol is shown in Eig.6.8. Cells are blown up, but still, membranes are of good integrity (Eig. 6.8). 

The curves represent the intraocular pH over time measured on real rabbit eyes that are burnt with 50 pL of 2M NaOH for 20 min and on the cornea for 20 s with a filter paper. The rinsing solutions were applied for 15 min with a flow of 66 mL/min. All curves represent five repeated experiments. Original data were published by Rihawi et al. in 2005. There is a considerable later onset of pH rise with low osmolarity rinsing and a lower extent of pH rise with tap water rinsing and an earlier onset of pH rise in all solutions containing ions like saline, Diphoterine , phosphate buffer, and RINGER lactate. 

Therapeutically, sodium lactate is used in infusions as a component of Ringer-lactate solution as an alternative for sodium hydrogencarbonate in light acidosis as a rehydrating agent and as a carrier for electrolyte concentrates or medicines in perfusion/infusion solutions.

Ringer . lactate, a solution containing several different salts, is often administered intravenously for the initial treatment of trauma patients. One liter of Ringer s lactate contains 0.102 mole of sodium chloride, 4 X 10 mole of potassium chloride, 1.5 X 10 mole of calcium chloride, and 2.8 X 10 mole of sodium lactate.
