The complexity of petroleum products raises the question of sample validity is the sample representative of the total flow The problem becomes that much more difficult when dealing with samples of heavy materials or samples coming from separations. The diverse chemical families in a petroleum cut can have very different physical characteristics and the homogeneous nature of the cut is often due to the delicate equilibrium between its components. The equilibrium can be upset by extraction or by addition of certain materials as in the case of the precipitation of asphaltenes by light paraffins. [Pg.28]

During storage, sediments decant with the water phase and deposit along with paraffins and asphalts in the bottoms of storage tanks as thick sludges or slurries (BS W). The interface between the water-sediment and the crude must be well monitored in order to avoid pumping the slurry into the refinery s operating units where it can cause serious upsets. [Pg.327]

An important safety feature on every modern rig is the blowout preventer (BOP). As discussed earlier on, one of the purposes of the drilling mud is to provide a hydrostatic head of fluid to counterbalance the pore pressure of fluids in permeable formations. The wisest fan choice is frequently not the cheapest fan. A small fan operates well on its curve but may not have adequate capacity for maximum flow control, future needs, or process upset conditions. It may be so lightly constmcted that it is operating near its peak speed with no provision for speed increases in the future, if needed. As fan size is increased, efficiency generally improves and wheel speed is lower. These factors decrease operating cost and provide reserve capacity for the future. MPD-1 fibers may be obtained by the polymeriza tion of isophthaloyl chloride and y -phenylenediamine in dimethyl acetamide with 5% lithium chloride. The reactants must be very carefully dried since the presence of water would upset the stoichiometry and lead to low molecular weight products. Temperatures in the range of 0 to —40° C are desirable to avoid such side reactions as transamidation by the amide solvent and acylation of y -phenylenediamine by the amide solvent. Control Room. The control room location can be critical to the efficient operation of a faciHty. One prime concern is to locate it the maximum distance from the most ha2ardous units. These units are usually the units where LPG or other flammables, eg, hydrocarbons that are heavier than air, can be released and accumulate at grade level. Deadly explosions can occur if a pump seal on a light-ends system fails and the heavier-than-air hydrocarbons coUect and are ignited by a flammable source. Also, the sulfur recovery unit area should be kept at a healthy distance away as an upset can cause deadly fumes to accumulate. [Pg.79]

Normal Operation. The designer of a chemical plant must provide an adequate interface between the process and the operating employees. This is usually accompHshed by providing instmments to sense pressures, temperatures, flows, etc, and automatic or remote-operated valves to control the process and utility streams. Alarms and interlock systems provide warnings of process upsets and automatic shutdown for excessive deviations from the desired ranges of control, respectively. Periodic intermption of operations is necessary to ensure that instmments are properly caUbrated and that emergency devices would operate if needed (see Flow measurement Temperaturemeasurement). [Pg.100]

When low boiling ingredients such as ethylene glycol are used, a special provision in the form of a partial condenser is needed to return them to the reactor. Otherwise, not only is the balance of the reactants upset and the raw material cost of the resin increased, but also they become part of the pollutant in the waste water and incur additional water treatment costs. Usually, a vertical reflux condenser or a packed column is used as the partial condenser, which is installed between the reactor and the overhead total condenser, as shown in Figure 3. The temperature in the partial condenser is monitored and maintained to effect a fractionation between water, which is to pass through, and the glycol or other materials, which are to be condensed and returned to the reactor. If the fractionation is poor, and water vapor is also condensed and returned, the reaction is retarded and there is a loss of productivity. As the reaction proceeds toward completion, water evolution slows down, and most of the glycol has combined into the resin stmcture. The temperature in the partial condenser may then be raised to faciUtate the removal of water vapor. [Pg.40]

The primary advantage of the feedforward over the feedback control strategy is that corrective action is initiated before the controlled variable is upset. Feedforward control, however, has its own drawbacks, ie, variables used to characterize the disturbances must be measurable a model of the response of the controlled variable to the disturbance must be available (when the feedforward strategy is used alone, the control performance depends on the accuracy of the model) and the feedforward control strategy does not compensate for any disturbance not measured or modeled. [Pg.61]

Volumetric heat generation increases with temperature as a single or multiple S-shaped curves, whereas surface heat removal increases linearly. The shapes of these heat-generation curves and the slopes of the heat-removal lines depend on reaction kinetics, activation energies, reactant concentrations, flow rates, and the initial temperatures of reactants and coolants (70).
