What I Know

Sometimes I work with process equipment as a field troubleshooter. Sometimes I specify equipment as a process design engineer. And often, I teach shift operators and plant engineers how equipment works. Whatever I m doing, 1 have in mind my childhood experiences in south Brooklyn. 1 focus on the analogy between the complex problem of today and the simple experiences of everyday life. 

I often have my head in the clouds, but 1 always keep my feet on the ground. I learned this from my mother. She was a great storehouse of knowledge. And I ve continued to learn as an adult too. Let me explain. 

The first skill that a new homeowner should acquire is toilet repair. 1 had my first lesson on this vital skill in 1969. We had just moved into our first house in south Chicago when 1 discovered our toilet wouldn t flush. An experienced co-worker at the American Oil Refinery in Whiting, Indiana (now BP), suggested that 1 check the roof vent (see Fig. 1.2). 

Climbing onto the roof I found that a pigeon had built its nest on top of the 3-inch diameter vent pipe. I removed the nest and the toilet flushed just fine. The water swirled around merrily in the bowl for a few seconds. Next, the water gushed and rushed down the toilet s drain with wonderful speed and vitality. The water seemed to be in such a hurry to leave the toilet bowl and escape through the sewer that it dragged a small amount of air with it. 

The verb to drag is a poor engineering term. The correct technical terminology describing this well-known phenomenon is that the rushing water sucked the air down the toilet s drain. But the sucking of air out of my bathroom could only happen if the pressure in the toilet s drain was less than the pressure in my bathroom. This idea bothered me for two reasons

But sleep does not come. I lie and think of Stephen. When I think about that episode, what is scariest is how physical and real the sensation was. I mean, I really felt the numb, prickly sensation like when your leg starts to fall asleep. And I really felt hot. It wasn t like I was in some dreamlike state. I was awake and alert, and if I knew then what I know now about heart attacks and strokes, I would have been fairly certain that s what was happening to me. 

As for myself, who profess to say nothing but what I know, and to write nothing but what I have done, I propose only in this little Treatise, to publish a short and easy method for the happy attainment of all the most necessary preparations of Chymistry. ...

I was a young organic chemist when I met Prof. Sergio Clementi, but from the very first moment I understood that his guide to the world of Chemometrics would have been a brainwashing for me. And indeed it was so. Sergio was a splendid teacher and what I know in the field of QSAR and Chemometrics is totally due to him. 

Probably not I m assuming that every one of you are probably still nervous as hell and would like some really badass professional pointers. I can dig it, and I ll tell you what I know.

Is each of my sentences as clear and precise as it could be for readers who do not know what I know Are there sentences that contain misplaced words or convoluted phrases that might cause confusion ... 

Waxman I don t know what I know is that there are complex differences in the after-potentials. 

I tasted every one of them and none was sweet. Based on what I know today about the toxicity of some of the organic phosphorus compounds, I would hesitate to taste again any new phosphorus compound. 

The greater part of what I know about constructing effective computer implementations of abstract algorithms I have learned from Mike Frisch and I am indebted to him for his advice over the years. 

What I know now is only partial, then it will be complete. 

I start a manuscript review by looking at the table of contents and comparing it with what I know about a subject. This gives me some idea of the completeness of the content. I also look for typos and readability in addition to technical accuracy on the basis of my knowledge of a subject. I usually do not look at tables in detail, but I am a visual person, so I look at figures for understanding. 

TO supplement my understanding of Western brain chemistry, IVe found it extremely useful to draw upon the centuries-old healing system from India known as Ayurveda, the science of life. A comprehensive and time-tested approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic medicine may well be the oldest system of healing in the world. It is still widely practiced in India, as well as among some practitioners in this country, including the famed holistic physician Deepak Chopra, from whom I ve learned what I know about this Mind-Body medicine. 

During the winter, ask yourself, "How can I create something useful, something resembling my dreams in my own backyard How can I weave what I know will work here and what I need to be inspired " You U be surprised at how quickly you get back on track and how much more energized you feel just by checking in. 

The editors and authors offer a great service to the diversity professional by creating and contributing to an easy-to-use, one-stop shop of in-depth information presented in a cohesive way. Seeking out these perspectives and works separately would be a timely and challenging endeavor. The chapters proactively and substantively address many of the issues I have observed and present below. They reinforce what I know, yet provide me with new insights. This is a book that I believe corporate leaders have needed for a long time. 

I take what I know about the people... Tm trying to think if I can give a specific example that would make it clear—... 

It is of course difficult to identify the right person that knows every about sodium coolant. This question means that even if I have been chosen, my own knowledge is only partial and mainly focused on my field of competence. So, it is necessary to keep in mind that all the field of the subject must be covered and not only what I know the most. 

I discussed this point a few weeks later with Breit. He said that he would like to centralize the work on a military reservation and he believed that if Fermi and Szilard agree to move to such a reservation, they will be well supported and fully informed of all progress and developments. The plan appeared reasonable to me but Fermi refused to work on a reservation. Knowing what I know now, it appears to me doubtful that full confidence would have been bestowed on Fermi and Szilard even if they had consented. On the contrary, their efficiency and influence might have been even more seriously impaired than under the arrangement which did go into effect. 

One of the things we don t teach is that, first of all, the scientific method is not the only way to do science, but one way. We don t teach about the cultural embeddedness of science. We do teach that science is strictly without value, human value. We teach that it s objective and that it s pure and what I know from my own research is that the same perspective has been used to hurt people of colour because if the science says it, it s objective, I didn t have anything to do with it... science was developed by you, so you had a lot to do with it. It had your personal biases... [Kelvin]... 

M What I don t understand, it s tied into what Mark said... where is the data at That s what I want to see, when we get to the relationship thing. I don t have any data to base these relationships on... I don t even know... I m only making these relationships, because of what I know about ponds and my own background... just personal experiences, playing around in a pond as a kid. I don t have empirical... I m just using intuition of what I ve read and watched on TV... stuff like that...
