Common antifogging agents are fatty acid esters such as glycerol and sorbitol stearate, fatty alcohols, and ethyloxylates of nonyl phenols. Condensation of water molecules on the iimer surface is often a problem for packages containing high moisture commodities. In those situations, antifogging compounds can be coated on the surface of the material or incorporated in the material during manufacture. Glycerol, sorbitol stearate, fatly alcohols, and ethyloxylates of nor l-phenols are used as antifogging additives. 

C12 to C20, primarily Ci6 to ( is), used as surface lubricants in the manufacture of food-contact articles. The method, which uses ethyl palmitate (Eastman Chemicals No. 1575 Red Label) as an internal standard, has been validated at 200 ppm total FAME [185]. Other FAME standards (methyl palmitate, methyl stearate, methyl oleate, methyl linoleate and methyl linolenate) are available (Applied Science Laboratories) [116], Worked out examples of additive determinations are given in the Food Additives Analytical Manual [116], which also describes a great many of indirect food additives, such as BHA, BHT, TBHQ, l-chloro-2-propanol, DLTDP, fatty acid methyl esters, w-heptyl-p-hydroxybenzoate, propyl-gallate, sodium benzoate, sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate, sorbitol and phenolic antioxidants. EPA methods 606 and 8060 describe the CGC separation of phthalate esters (direct injection) (cf. Figure 4.2).

Polysorbate 60 occurs as a yellow to orange colored, oily liquid or semigel. It is a mixture of stearate and palmitate partial esters of sorbitol and sorbitol anhydrides condensed with approximately 20 moles of ethylene oxide (C2H40) for each mole of sorbitol and its mono- and dianhydrides. It is soluble in water, in aniline, in ethyl acetate, and in toluene, but it is insoluble in mineral oil and in vegetable oils.

The thermal analysis studies of different forms of sorbitol, mannitol, glucose, magnesium stearate are reviewed in Ref. l Mono-, di-, and trihydrate of magnesium stearate as well as the amorphous form may be found. According to Wada and Matsubyara ° thermal analysis is the most appropriate method for characterization of magnesium stearate. 

Clear antiperspirants have become popular because they leave no visible residue.They are not always formulated through a microemulsion route. Clear sticks can be based on dibenzylidene sorbitol acetal (DBSA) gelling agent and zirconium or glycine-complexed aluminum chlorhydrate antiperspirant actives that are soluble in propylene glycol without water. An alternative route is to closely match the refractive indices of the oil and water phases so a clear product (not a microemulsion) results for an antiperspirant gel [20,23]. Clear deodorant sticks with the active ingredient triclosan can be solidified with sodium stearate, which is incompatible with antiperspirant active ingredients (aluminium chlorhydrates). 

Common emulsifiers were tested in over 1,200 eczema patients in Finland (Hannuksela et al. 1976 b). Allergic reactions were found in 21% of those tested, the great majority of the patients were also sensitive to other substances. The emulsifiers responsible for the positive reactions in 0.3%-0.7% of the cases were Lanet-te (sorbitan sesquioleate), the Spans (polyoxyethylene oxypropylene stearate), polyoxyethylene sorbitol lanolin derivative and triethanolamine stearate. Tweens were positive in only two cases. Maibach and Connant (1977) reported contact urticaria to polysorbate 60 (Tween 60). Sorbitan monolaurate in a hydrocortisone cream (Alphaderm) caused allergic contact dermatitis in a woman after treatment with Alphaderm for 1 week (Finn and Forsyth 1975).
