Naphtha: Stoddard Solvent

We believe it has been shown that this method for infrared analysis of hydrocarbons collected on charcoal tubes and vapor monitors is a valid and acceptable one. Further work is being done to validate the method for other hydrocarbons such as petroleum naphtha, Stoddard solvent, and other JP aviation fuels. Additionally, work is being done to determine the 3M monitor sampling rate for JP-4. [Pg.48]

NAPHTHA STODDARD SOLVENT (8052-41-3) Forms explosive mixture with air (flash point 100°-140 F/38°-60°C). Incompatible with nitric acid, strong oxidizers. Attacks some plastics, rubber, and coatings. Flow or agitation of substance may generate electrostatic charges due to low conductivity. [Pg.836]

VOC = volatile organic compound HAP = Hazardous air pollutant Sec 313 of the Emergency Right-to-know Act (EPCRA), also known as Title 111 of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (40 CFR Part 372). Use of strong acid process, no supplier notification. Ligroine (light naphtha), VM P naphtha, Stoddard solvent, and certain paint thinners are also commonly referred to as mineral spirits. These distillation fractions contain less than 10 % by mass HAPs (see Table 14.26.4). [Pg.1029]

Stoddard solvent is a petroleum distillate widely used as a dry-cleaning solvent and as a general cleaner and degreaser. It may also be used as paint thinner, as a solvent in some types of photocopier toners, in some types of printing inks, and in some adhesives. Stoddard solvent is considered to be a form of mineral spirits, white spirits, and naphtha however, not all forms of mineral spirits, white spirits, and naphtha are considered to be Stoddard solvent. [Pg.71]

Following the lead provided in 1942 and thereafter by truck gardeners in carrot (S) and parsnip (ff) fields, investigations were started in nursery weed control, involving use of some of the more highly refined petroleum products known as mineral spirits or petroleum spirits. Their common industrial uses are as cleaning naphthas, paint thinners, and solvents. Among trade names of products successfully used in weed control in forest nurseries are Stoddard solvent, Sovasol No. 5, Varsol, Stanisol, Shell solvent, and Sohio weed killer. [Pg.84]

In 1947, a weed kill of 91.2 and 90.8% was obtained in preliminary trials 11) with Stoddard solvent and Sovasol No. 5, applied at 70 to 80 gallons per acre in Hugo Sauer Nursery in northern Wisconsin, In this same series of tests, ordinary stove oil of higher boiling point than cleaning naphthas gave comparatively poor control of weeds. [Pg.86]

Although the toxicity of Stoddard solvent is not attributable to any one type of constituent, the aromatic components are considered to be more toxic than the paraffin or naphtha/naphthene components. Solvents tend to cause a nonspecific narcosis. This is generally believed to be due to the disrupting (or solublizing) effect that the solvent has on cellular membranes, particularly those of the nervous system. [Pg.1957]

Mixtures constitute a category of solvents produced by distillation and cracking of petroleum. The group includes gasoline, petroleum ether, rubber solvent, petroleum naphtha, mineral spirits, white spirits, Stoddard solvent, kerosene, and jet fuels (Lilis 1992). Gasolines are mixtures of alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and antiknock additives. [Pg.193]

Alcohol consumption increases toxic effects. Degree of toxicity depends on composition of mixture. Shell Sol and solvent naphtha are trade names. For data on comm ial products see supplier s information. TLV depends on composition. Stoddard solvent (aromattc content < 20%) has TLV TWA of tOOppm and 5mg/m. Packaging special material. [Pg.686]
