Deodorant sticks

Stearic acid is the most common of the long-chain fatty acids. It is found in many foods, such as beef fat and cocoa butter. It is widely used as a lubricant in soaps, cosmetics, food packaging, deodorant sticks, and toothpastes. It is also a commonly used softener in rubber. 

In addition to instability manifested by odor changes, there is also perfume instability that results in color changes. These are particularly bothersome in light-colored soap bars but may also cause problems in products such as creams and lotions, deodorant sticks, and shampoos. Usually they involve a progressive darkening from colorless through yellow to brown tones, although instances of reddish discolorations are also known (e.g., by indole). The most important perfume materials that often cause discoloration in soap are listed in Chapter 18 they may cause problems in other media as well. 

Clear antiperspirants have become popular because they leave no visible residue.They are not always formulated through a microemulsion route. Clear sticks can be based on dibenzylidene sorbitol acetal (DBSA) gelling agent and zirconium or glycine-complexed aluminum chlorhydrate antiperspirant actives that are soluble in propylene glycol without water. An alternative route is to closely match the refractive indices of the oil and water phases so a clear product (not a microemulsion) results for an antiperspirant gel [20,23]. Clear deodorant sticks with the active ingredient triclosan can be solidified with sodium stearate, which is incompatible with antiperspirant active ingredients (aluminium chlorhydrates).

Applications. The main application of fatty carboxylates is found in the soap bars used worldwide for hand-washing fabrics (generally based on tallow/coconut oil mixtures). Water-soluble soaps are mainly used in skin cleansers (soap bars or liquids), shaving products (sticks, foams, or creams), and deodorant sticks. Water-insoluble soaps form gels in nonaqueous systems and, due to their hydrophobicity, they can be appropriate surfactants for water/oil (w/o) emulsions.
